Surprising truth behind 'Shark Tank' and its impact on US economy
This was the Los Angeles set of "Shark Tank," the ABC show that for 15 years has turned business negotiation into entertainment. Aspiring entrepreneurs use hustle, gross margins and cringeworthy pitches to pry money from the so-called Sharks in exchange for a stake in their companies. On one level, «Shark Tank» is your basic reality TV show. The pitches, which last about 45 minutes, are edited to snappy 12- to 15-minute segments with music scored for suspense over tight shots of bug-eyed, sweaty supplicants. Some founders leave the tank defeated, humiliated or in tears. Others leave triumphant with handshake deals.

How can companies transform workplace safety into a strategic advantage
productivity and potentially causing irreparable damage. Similarly, in the workplace, safety acts as the foundation that keeps all parts moving smoothly—ensuring that each team member can perform their role without fear of harm or disruption. When safety is overlooked, the organization risks grinding to a halt, suffering not only from productivity loss but also from damage to its reputation and the trust of its employees. Thus, workplace safety is not just a protective measure, but it is the silent yet critical force that keeps the organizational functions running effectively and efficiently. The expanding scope of workplace safety Traditionally, workplace safety has focused primarily on preventing physical injuries—ensuring that office setups are safe, emergency exits are accessible, and employees are trained to handle potential hazards. While these fundamentals remain essential, the concept of safety has evolved to embrace a more holistic approach, encompassing not only the physical but also the psychological and emotional well-being of employees along with safeguarding digital spaces.

Meta releases AI model that can check other AI models' work
Meta said on Friday it was releasing a batch of new AI models from its research division, including a "Self-Taught Evaluator" that may offer a path toward less human involvement in the AI development process. The release follows Meta's introduction of the tool in an August paper, which detailed how it relies upon the same «chain of thought» technique used by OpenAI's recently released o1 models to get it to make reliable judgments about models' responses. That technique involves breaking down complex problems into smaller logical steps and appears to improve the accuracy of responses on challenging problems in subjects like science, coding and math.

Google granted request to pause order on Play store overhaul
Google's request to temporarily pause his order directing the Alphabet unit to overhaul its Android app store Play by Nov. 1 to give consumers more choice over how they download software. San Francisco-based US District Judge James Donato made the decision on Friday as part of an antitrust lawsuit against Google brought by «Fortnite» maker Epic Games. Google argued that Donato's October 7 injunction would harm the company and introduce «serious safety, security and privacy risks into the Android ecosystem.» Donato delayed the injunction to allow the San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to consider Google's separate request to pause the judge's order.

Japan shifting back to nuclear to ditch coal, power AI
Nuclear Power Station, October 19, 2024 -Glinting in the sun by the world's biggest nuclear plant, the Sea of Japan is calm now. But as the huge facility gears up to restart, Kashiwazaki-Kariwa has a new tsunami wall, just in case. Japan pulled the plug on nuclear power after the 2011 Fukushima disaster, but with the G7's dirtiest energy mix, it is seeking to cut emissions, and atomic energy is making a steady comeback, in part because of AI. At the 400-hectare (1,000-acre) KK plant, shown to AFP in an exclusive tour, the 15-metre (50-foot) wall is just one measure to prevent another catastrophe and reassure the public and Japan's jittery neighbours.

US Presidential Elections: Harris, Trump barnstorm Michigan, spar over who has stamina
Harris raised questions about Republican Donald Trump's physical stamina to serve effectively as president as the two rivals tore through the deadlocked battleground state of Michigan on Friday, with Trump lashing back about the energy he's shown on the campaign trail. Harris, who turns 60 on Sunday, pressed the case to raise doubts about the 78-year-old Trump. Age had been an issue when President Joe Biden, 81, was still in the race, but had faded after he dropped his election bid. Harris on Friday said news reports that former president Trump was skipping interviews because he was tired and had passed on the chance of a second debate with her raised questions about his fitness for office.
