India has all probability of producing youngest Grandmaster: Harika
Grandmaster at the age of 12 back in June 2021 but leading chess player D Harika feels the way the age barrier is being shattered in the sport, it's a matter of time the bar will be reset and probably by an Indian. Harika, one of only three Indian women players to become a Grandmaster, is currently playing in the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League (GCL) here and said that the momentum created by the Indian men's team in the Chess Olympiad in Budapest recently, helped the women too aim for the gold during the historic campaign. India made history by winning their first-ever gold medals in the Olympiad with both the men's and women's teams taking the top podium finishes. «The generation in general is getting smarter. My daughter is just two years old and she can already identify the chess pieces,» said Harika, the two-time Asian Games medallist and a member of the gold-winning Indian women's team in the Olympiad.

Samsung has acceded to most demands of workers, says TN govt
Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday said Samsung India Electronics has accepted most of the demands of workers, who commenced strike on September 9, and reiterated its request that employees resume work immediately. In a related development, on Tuesday night, some participants/those related to the strike were arrested by police and were later released 'on their own bond' by a magistrate. A key demand of the Samsung workers, registration of their union, backed by the CPI(M) affiliated Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), is, however, yet to be accepted by the authorities. Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin said Samsung, a multinational, has its own rules. The only bone of contention is registration of the workers union. «Samsung says that they will not accept a Union which has a political affiliation. This is their stand. Currently, discussions are going on,» he told reporters.

Smartphone sales decline amid festive season; consumer electronics, apparel show growth
festive season sales compared to last year. Tepid demand for entry-level handsets weighed on the overall industry. Television and household appliance sales grew by 2-3% by volume sales during the period, led by premium products, as per estimates from leading brands and market researchers. Apparel brands and retailers saw a 6-8% increase in same store value sales, bringing cheer to the industry. While e-commerce platforms saw muted demand in the first few days of their biggest annual sales, which began on September 26, it started to recover from Navratri onwards with consumers getting their monthly pay checks, Diwali bonuses and the end of the Shraadh period, which is considered inauspicious for new purchases.

India's coal-fired monthly power output slips consecutively for the first time since pandemic
coal-fired power output fell for a second straight month in September on an annual basis due to slower growth in electricity use and a surge in solar generation, a Reuters review of data from the federal grid regulator showed. The decline reflects a shift in fuel use patterns in the world's fastest growing major economy and third-largest greenhouse gas emitter. It follows 47 straight months of year-over-year growth in coal use for power generation. Electricity use in India has been rising since the pandemic due to a surging economy as well as heatwaves. However, higher rainfall during this year's monsoon reduced air-conditioning demand and weighed on power consumption, analysts say.

RBI keeps repo rate unchanged, shifts to neutral policy stance
RBI) Wednesday kept interest rates unchanged for the 10th straight policy review, but altered the stance of monetary policy to ‘neutral’ from ‘withdrawal of accommodation’, creating for itself the space to begin a rate-easing cycle as consumer inflation remains within the legally mandated tramlines. At its fourth bi-monthly policy statement for 2024-25 (April-March), the RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) said that the repo rate — or the rate at which the central bank lends to banks — will remain at 6.5%. All other rates also remain where they were. A basis point is a hundredth of a percentage point. Five of the six members of the MPC voted to keep the repo rate unchanged, with incoming external member Nagesh Kumar voting for a rate cut of 25 basis points. This week’s MPC meeting is the first with three new external members – Saugata Bhattacharya, Ram Singh and Kumar.

RBI's repo rate hold, growth outlook likely to support steady housing sales
economic growth outlook, is expected to uphold the stable growth pattern in the housing property market. The ongoing steady growth in transactions for mid-range and luxury residential properties, along with a cautious approach toward the interest rate-sensitive affordable and low-income housing markets, is expected to continue, experts said. “The Reserve Bank of India's decision to maintain the repo rate at 6.5% and adopt a neutral stance reflects an astute understanding of the complex geopolitical and economic landscape. While a 25basis point cut could have further energized festive sales and buoyed market sentiment, the current approach represents a balanced measure to sustain financial health,” said Niranjan Hiranandani — Chairman, NAREDCO and Hiranandani Group.
