Why metals can’t be a long-term play. What to buy in consumer space? Ashi Anand answers
Ashi Anand, Founder & CEO, IME Capital, says “we are seeing a larger risk on trade, FII flows are starting to come back in. It is really the context of the current strength in metals. But from a slightly longer-term perspective, the Chinese economy is really struggling and importantly, it is the housing sector in China which is really struggling the most. Just two days ago, a Chinese developer went bankrupt. Now, China has been the core driver of global demand for metals and if the biggest demand driver is really going to be weak, it is really difficult to build any kind of longer-term fundamental call on at least the core metals.” A lot of interest in the IPO market and considering you track this space closely, any business that you have liked, any IPO that you have subscribed to? Ashi Anand: Yes, we are tracking the IPO space. There are certain interesting IPOs coming up. There are certain D2C brands which are coming up. There are certain other digital platforms. So, it is a space that we are tracking. The only problem is the IPO market is probably a bit too hot. Participation is probably being too high. There is a large amount of IPOs which probably are not of that high quality seeing very large subscription numbers.

OMCs a short-term play; beware of froth in IPO market: Nitin Raheja
Nitin Raheja, ED, Julius Baer Wealth Advisors, says “OMCs are short-term tactical plays and that is how we look at them. If in the next couple of months, before the election code comes into play, crude remains benign, then they will be good, in fact, for a good part of the next year. But fundamentally, the fact that they do not really have complete freedom and there is interference from the government and the ministry, means they can’t be long-term strategic compounders.” This year has been marked by the comeback of the oil and gas PSUs. What is your take on this because there was always a regulatory overhang which challenged the institutional investors not to participate in these stocks in a big way. Do you think some of those worries are getting abated now? Nitin Raheja: I do not think so. I do not see anything which has significantly changed from a regulatory perspective. These are good short-term tactical plays. OMCs are benefitting from the fact that crude has remained relatively benign, so they have not faced those pressures. If in the next couple of months, before the election code comes into play, crude remains benign, then they will be good, in fact, for a good part of the next year. But fundamentally, the fact that they do not really have complete freedom and there is interference from time to time from the government and the ministry do not make them long-term strategic compounders. They are good short-term plays that is how we look at it.

Want to create a stable mutual fund portfolio in 2024? Here's what to do
mutual fund portfolio is not so tough in today's time. However, choosing the right funds, right allocations and right investment goals is something that comes with experience in the market. The ever-so-volatile nature of stock markets may sound scary at first but with the right strategies you can achieve decent returns without doing much. In an ET Markets exclusive interview, Chethan Shenoy, Executive Director & Head of Research & Product at Anand Rathi Wealth Ltd opened up about the strategies that investors can use to create a stable fund portfolio in 2024. Edited excerpts: Q. What is the first step when it comes to portfolio creation? Always set a target and an EMF alpha target. For example, a 12% portfolio return target and a 3% equity MF alpha target above the Nifty 50. The next step is deciding on asset allocation. You must opt for asset classes that have a low correlation. Debt and Equity have a low correlation, and a combo of these two assets can help in targeting a return of around 12% based on your horizon of investment. EMF has delivered an average return of 12-13% over the long term, and Debt MFs have approximately delivered a 7% return. In the Debt portion, consider funds with a roll-down strategy or arbitrage funds. Gains from arbitrage are treated as equity gains, qualifying for a lower tax rate as compared to normal debt funds.
