BARC increases TV viewership meter count to 59,000: Sources
BARC), India's sole TV viewership measurement body, has increased its meter count used for measuring viewership of Indian TV audiences to 59,000 and is on course to touch 65,000 in the near term, say sources privy to the development. BARC has set a target of installing 65,000 bar-o-meters which are used to collect TV viewership data, and is adding new meters every month to achieve its target, one of the sources said. The council had installed 55,000 bar-o-meters as of December 2022, in accordance with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting's (MIB) policy guidelines for TV rating agencies in India. The increase in meter count comes amid calls from various sections of the industry to increase the BARC panel size to capture precise TV viewership data from India's urban and rural areas. Meterology Data, in which BARC owns 51% and TAM Media owns the remaining 49%, deploys and maintains the bar-o-meters. It also has 2500 OOH meters to collect representative data from India's urban and rural areas. The bar-o-meters are used to collect real-time data beamed through GSM networks, which are supported by a network of field personnel, electronic equipment, and a strong IT backbone. BARC is promoted by the Indian Broadcasting and Digital Foundation (IBDF), the Indian Society of Advertisers (ISA), and the Advertising Agencies Association of India (AAAI). The IBDF holds a 60% stake in BARC, with the ISA and AAAI owning 20% each.

₹10,000 crore—more than $1 billion (about ₹8,300 crore) —and I don’t think we’ll need to take that figure up further. Will local electronics manufacturing in India need concerted efforts to create a component supply chain now, given that we’re assembling a sizeable amount? Even China, which controls 70-72% of the global value chains (GVCs), makes a value addition that is in the low two-digits. Even they, for exports exceeding $1 trillion, import $650-700 billion in components.

When FMCG giants pushed on with a cartful of troubles
FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods) companies have a lot going for them: rising disposable incomes, rapid pace of urbanisation, growing aspirations and lower penetration of branded products. However, despite a vast growth opportunity, the FMCG companies struggled with various challenges in 2023 and hope to have a better 2024. Weaker-than-expected festive demand, rainfall deficit that hampered rural growth, unseasonal rains that dampened sale of beverages and higher commodity prices constituted a daunting landscape for India's FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods) companies in 2023. When inflation was at a record high, the FMCG industry had a high price-led growth in the last five-six quarters, though the volume was under stress. However, the trend has started reversing with the cooling of commodity prices. While volume growth for the FMCG industry in urban India has been on a positive trajectory since April-June last year, rural markets have grown marginally this calendar year, according to market researcher NielsenIQ. In the September quarter, urban markets grew 10.2% year-on-year while rural grew 6.4%, it said. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, rural markets were driving overall growth, growing twice as fast as urban markets. But the demand has slowed down in the current quarter. Overall sales of apparel and electronic products have been languishing for over a year now, while those of mass-segment electronic products have been low since the pandemic outbreak. According to researcher GfK, there was a slight pick-up in mass segment during Diwali. Below are some of the challenges faced by the FMCG companies that attracted attention in 2023:

North Korea's Kim Jong Un orders military to prepare for possible 'war'
Kim Jong Un wrapped the year with fresh threats of a nuclear attack on Seoul and orders for a military arsenal build-up to prepare for a war that can «break out at any time» on the peninsula, state media reported Sunday. Kim lambasted the United States during a lengthy speech at the end of five days of year-end party meetings that set his country's military, political, and economic policy decisions for 2024. The meeting announced plans for further military development in the coming year, including launching three more spy satellites, building unmanned drones and developing electronic warfare capabilities, as well as strengthening nuclear and missile forces, according to the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). Pyongyang this year successfully launched a reconnaissance satellite, enshrined its status as a nuclear power in its constitution, and test-fired the most advanced intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) in its arsenal. At the meeting that ended Saturday, Kim accused the United States of posing «various types of military threat» and ordered his armed forces to maintain «overwhelming war response capability», according to KCNA. It is a «fait accompli that a war can break out at any time on the Korean peninsula due to reckless moves by the enemies to invade us», Kim said. In an effort to deter Pyongyang, Washington earlier this month deployed a nuclear-powered submarine in the South Korean port city of Busan, and flew its long-range bombers in drills with Seoul and Tokyo. The North has previously described the deployment of Washington's strategic weapons — such as B-52 bombers — in joint drills on the Korean peninsula as the «intentional nuclear war provocative moves». «We must respond quickly to a

Samsung to finally get its FY21 incentives under PLI scheme
Samsung for the first year — FY21 — of the smartphone production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, officials told ET. The approval, granted after over two years, came after the smartphone major revised its claims as the government had found some discrepancies in the original paperwork. «The claims for the first year have been approved and the amount is likely to be disbursed in a couple of weeks,» an official said. The approved amount though is nearly half of the ₹900 crore that Samsung had initially filed for in August 2021, claiming to have achieved the target of ₹15,000 crore worth of incremental sales for FY21. To claim the subsidy, Samsung had to produce handsets with a factory cost of more than $200 (roughly ₹15,000). However, the ministry of electronics and information technology (Meity) found some discrepancies in the company's invoices and held back the incentives. While Samsung was the only company to have achieved the production targets in the first year of the PLI scheme, it is the last one to get the incentives due to the discrepancies and subsequent checks.
