Israel steps up bombing of central Gaza, strikes kill 26 people
The escalation came a day after Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah began a ceasefire in Lebanon, halting more than a year of hostilities and raising hopes among many Palestinians in Gaza for a similar deal with Hamas, which rules the enclave. Israel's military campaign — with the avowed intent of eradicating Hamas militants after the group's deadly raid on southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023 — has laid waste to the enclave of 2.3 million people.

Latest 'massive' Russian aerial attack cuts power to 1 million homes in Ukraine
missiles and drones and leaving more than a million households without power, Ukrainian officials said. Russia's second major aerial attack on Ukraine's power grid in less than two weeks amplified fears that the Kremlin aims to cripple the country's power generation capacity before winter. «Attacks on energy facilities are happening all over Ukraine,» Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko said in a post on Facebook. He added that emergency power outages were implemented nationwide.

Israel says ceasefire with Hezbollah violated, fires on south Lebanon
Hezbollah was breached hours after Lebanese security sources said Israeli tanks attacked six areas of southern Lebanon, calling into question a truce reached after more than a year of fighting. A ceasefire between Israel and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah took effect on Wednesday under a deal brokered by the U.S. and France, intended to allow people in both countries to start returning to homes in border areas shattered by 14 months of fighting. The Israeli military said the ceasefire was violated after what it called suspects, some in vehicles, arrived at several areas in the southern zone.

Health dept told to include AB-PMJAY benefits with Delhi govt's free healthcare service: CM Atishi
Atishi on Thursday said the Health Department has been directed to devise a mechanism to incorporate the benefits of the Ayushman Bharat scheme without withdrawing the benefits of the Delhi government's free healthcare facilities for the people. In a press conference, she said the Delhi government has been in principle ready to implement the Centre's Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme. But there are some contradictions and problems in implementation, the CM said. The Delhi high court on Wednesday sought the stand of the AAP government on a plea by seven BJP MPs from the national capital, seeking implementation of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY). Atishi said the problems in the implementation of AB-PMJAY arise because the Delhi government is already providing comprehensive free medical facilities in its hospitals.

Rajasthan Court’s notice on Ajmer shrine sparks political outrage in Kashmir
Former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti, said that despite a Supreme Court ruling that the status quo of the religious places should be maintained as it existed in 1947, his judgement has paved the way for surveys of these sites potentially leading to increased tension between Hindus and Muslims. “Thanks to a former Chief Justice of India a Pandora's box has been opened, sparking a contentious debate about minority religious places…The recent violence in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh is the direct result of this judgment,” said Mufti. The People’s Democratic Party chief said that first mosques and now muslim shrines like Ajmer Sharif are being targeted. “This can result in further bloodshed. The question remains — who will take responsibility for perpetuating this communal violence reminiscent of the partition days?” she asked. The Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991, maintains that barring Ayodhya, status quo as on August 15, 1947, will have to be maintained at religious structures across the country. However in 2023, the then CJI D Y Chandrachud had argued that the PW Act 1991 does not debar ascertainment of the religious character of a place of worship and thus allowed a survey at Gyanvapi Mosque, in Varanasi.

Embrace values
value-driven life is like an engine-driven vehicle, and one without values is like a vehicle without an engine. Values drive us to achieve our goals. The four values-dedication, knowledge, trust and responsibility-are like four cylinders or core values that energise the engine for excellence in the right direction. Your life should be such that it helps you assimilate these values. When good values guide your life, the world seems like heaven. Adi Shankaracharya says in the Bhaj Govindam: 'Nitya anitya viveka vichara'-reflection on discrimination of what is eternal and noneternal; what is permanent and what is passing. Values are simply the knowledge of what lasts and what passes away.

Edible oil prices likely to drop 9% by mid-December
edible oil prices set to fall, after a gap of four months, from mid-December by up to 9% following a drop in international prices of soybean, sunflower and palm oil by $100 dollars per tonne in the last fortnight. Abundant global production of soybean has pushed down prices of soybean oil. Sunflower oil prices are also cooling off while palm oil prices have fallen since Indonesia, the world's biggest palm oil producer, is yet to frame its biodiesel policy. Indonesia produces biodiesel from a blend of palm oil and fossil fuel-based diesel. The country currently uses 35% palm oil in biodiesel, which the government was planning to raise to 40%, a move opposed by environmentalists. This has forced the Indonesian government to rethink the issue.

How Musk-Trump will take on tech
However, the relationship between the tech industry and Trump 2.0 will be shaped by three factors: 1) deregulation 2) antitrust policy 3) possible confrontation with China. This dynamic could fundamentally reshape the tech sector domestically in the US and globally. The cornerstone of Trump's tech policy is likely to be aggressive deregulation. In contrast to the Biden administration's oversight approach, particularly regarding AI and data privacy, Trump has consistently advocated for reducing regulatory barriers. This deregulatory stance could give tech companies greater freedom to innovate and expand their operations with less government oversight, an arena where Musk has skin in the game.

Putin says Russia could hit 'decision-making centres' in Kyiv with new missile
Oreshnik hypersonic missile to attack «decision-making centres» in Kyiv in response to Ukraine's firing of Western missiles at Russian territory, President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday. Russia has not so far struck Ukrainian government ministries, parliament or the president's office in the course of the 33-month war. Kyiv is heavily protected by air defences, but Putin says the Oreshnik, which Russia fired for the first time at a Ukrainian city last week, is incapable of being intercepted — a claim greeted with scepticism by Western experts.

Dynastic candidates were fielded across Maharashtra in assembly elections
Dynastic candidates — those with family ties to established political families — were fielded across party lines in the recent Maharashtra assembly elections, with more than 80 per cent of constituencies featuring such contestants. But political connections did not guarantee success as a modest 30 per cent of such candidates won, noted a report compiled by activist and political observer Heramb Kulkarni. Even the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which routinely targets the Opposition over dynastic politics, had over 30 per cent of its contestants with ties to political families. Of the total 288 constituencies, 237 (82 per cent) saw candidates from political families. They included the children, spouses, siblings or other relatives of former and sitting MLAs, MPs and ministers, said the report released on Wednesday. The Nationalist Congress Party (SP) led by veteran Sharad Pawar had the highest proportion of dynastic leaders in its candidate list. Of the 86 candidates it fielded, 39 or 45 per cent were related to established politicians. Of 59 candidates fielded by the rival Ajit Pawar-led NCP, 26 or 44 per cent had 'family connections'. The Congress followed closely with 41.5 per cent such candidates (42 of 101). Of the 149 nominees fielded by the BJP (which contested the highest number of seats among all parties), 49 or 32 per cent were related to political leaders. The two Shiv Sena factions had comparatively less dynastic representation in their lists.

"Our party was once a national party. To reclaim that status, we need to work harder now": Ajit Pawar hints at spreading NCP's footprints
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Chief Ajit Pawar on Thursday emphasised the need to expand his party at the national level following its significant success in the Maharashtra Assembly elections. Speaking at the NCP meeting in the national capital, Pawar highlighted the importance of working towards regaining the party's status as a national political force. «Our party was once a national party. To reclaim that status, we need to work harder now. We will fight, and we will achieve success,» he said.
