Narendra Modi urging people to guard against the menace of 'digital' arrests, probe agencies said they are taking action against this category of cyber crime with the ED filing a charge sheet in one such case and the I4C issuing a fresh advisory. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) issued a statement on Saturday, saying it filed a prosecution complaint before a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court in Bengaluru last month against eight accused who allegedly «lured» common people through «fake» IPO allotments and stock market investments through fraudulent apps. «Probe found that a huge network of cyber scams in India, involving fake stock market investments and digital arrest schemes executed primarily through social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Telegram. »Known as 'pig-butchering' scams, stock market investment scams entice victims with promises of high returns, using fake websites and misleading WhatsApp groups that appear connected to reputable financial firms," the Enforcement Directorate said.

Japan plans automated cargo transport system to relieve shortage of drivers and cut emissions
Japan is planning to build an automated cargo transport corridor between Tokyo and Osaka, dubbed a «conveyor belt road» by the government, to make up for a shortage of truck drivers. The amount of funding for the project is not yet set. But it's seen as one key way to help the country cope with soaring deliveries. A computer graphics video made by the government shows big, wheeled boxes moving along a three-lane corridor, also called an «auto flow road,» in the middle of a big highway. A trial system is due to start test runs in 2027 or early 2028, aiming for full operations by the mid-2030s. «We need to be innovative with the way we approach roads,» said Yuri Endo, a senior deputy director overseeing the effort at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.

Win the vote but still lose? Behold America's Electoral College
Donald Trump defied polls and expectations to defeat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 US presidential election, he described the victory as «beautiful.» Not everyone saw it that way — considering that Democrat Clinton had received nearly three million more votes nationally than her Republican rival. Non-Americans were particularly perplexed that the second-highest vote-getter would be the one crowned president. But Trump had done what the US system requires: win enough individual states, sometimes by very narrow margins, to surpass the 270 Electoral College votes necessary to win the White House.

More than just optics! Data centres, 5G push powering fibre cable boom
data centre boom globally, in addition to rapid 5G rollouts, is silently propelling the growth of another ancillary industry: Optic fibre cables (OFCs). With top dollar expected to flow into the segment in the next decade, service providers and fibre manufacturers are looking to simultaneously strengthen deployment locally and double down on building capacities and boosting exports. Investment banking firm Avendus Capital expects around $2 billion capital expenditure towards data centre fibre alone over the next decade, with global private equity funds eyeing the India opportunity. Deloitte estimates that overall fibre deployment in India will be 4 million kilometres in 2024, expected to expand at 12- 15% over the next two years. Manufacturers are also looking to harness India’s already established credentials. According to data from the Ministry of Commerce, India’s OFC exports to more than 100 countries in FY24 totalled Rs 39,600 crore. Nearly half of the shipments were to major European nations, including Spain, the Netherlands, Poland, Italy, and the Czech Republic.
