Private capex yet to get broad-based, experts differ on next year’s trajectory
private capex is concentrated only in a few industries and is yet to get more broad-based, economists said. Fixed asset investment grew faster in the construction and consumer-facing sectors like retail, finance, and consumer durables than the average growth registered across 1,420 industries, showed an ET analysis of data compiled by Bank of Baroda. Auto, power, and telecom were laggards, according to Bank of Baroda data, growing slower than the 7.1% growth registered across enterprises in the first half of FY23. “It can be concluded that investment activity is not yet broad-based. It is in limited pockets.

Samvat 2080: 5 market mavens share money-making mantra for the new year
Samvat 2080. The Hindu accounting year began with an upgrade from global brokerage Goldman Sachs which said India is expected to see “the best structural growth prospects in the region” with mid-teens earnings growth over the next two years. The market’s strategic appeal, particularly given its largely domestically driven growth, offers investors a wide array of alpha-generating themes, including make-in-India, largecap compounders and midcap multibaggers, Goldman said. Here’s what Dalal Street’s top 5 market moguls say on money-making opportunities in Samvat 2080: Sunil Singhania We think there is still merit, particularly in some of the larger second-tier banks. We are seeing performances on the fundamental side in terms of their NII, operating profit, and PAT growth. Their ROEs are now comparable to some of the larger banks and the asset quality is spic and span.

MFs shunned these 10 mid, smallcap stocks for 3 months in a row; what should investors do?
smallcap stocks have been the flavour of the season for Dalal Street investors, giving superlative returns. However, the sharp rally has prompted mutual funds to book profits in some of them. The monthly MF holdings data showed that the domestic institutions have reduced exposure to 10 such mid- and smallcap stocks for three consecutive months. Of the 10 stocks, nine of them have given double-digit returns of up to 43% so far in the current financial year, while one has turned multibagger. Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, Bank of India, Thermax, Uno Minda, and Vedant Fashions are the five midcap stocks which saw mutual funds reducing their exposure for three months in a row, according to the data shared by Nuvama Institutional Equities. The five smallcap stocks that saw selling by MFs for three consecutive months were Galaxy Surfactants, Ingersoll Rand, BEML, Home First Finance, and MTAR Technologies. Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders/BEML These two defence sector superstars have given whopping returns to investors so far in FY24.

Yen's slide to multi-decade lows keeps markets on intervention alert
yen was stuck near a three-decade low against the dollar on Tuesday, struggling to find a floor as the Bank of Japan's (BOJ) ultra-easy monetary policy settings remained at odds with the prospect of higher-for-longer rates elsewhere. The Japanese currency similarly slumped to a 15-year low of 162.38 per euro in early Asia trade and slid to a roughly three-month trough of 186.25 per British pound. Against the dollar, the yen last stood at 151.72, languishing near a one-year low of 151.92 hit on Monday.

Looking for power play? Buy these 5 stocks as SIP, says Sanjiv Bhasin
Sanjiv Bhasin, Director, IIFL Securities, says people are talking of largecap underperformance. But the stars have been REC, PFC, NTPC, and Coal India. While people kept doubting the PSU rally, they kept going higher. There is still more steam there. I would not advocate buying fresh ad hoc, one can do SIP in some of these stocks. These are on a multi-year high, which means there is much under participation, particularly from mutual funds and FIIs that these stocks are going to be huge outperformers. Is there a trade in the short term in any of the jewellery, retail or textile stocks, considering everyone I have spoken to, referred to very long lines outside big stores. Correct. I think Reliance Retail will be the biggest beneficiary. They are adding about 800 outlets per quarter. One thing which is getting unnoticed by the market is how fast Reliance Retail is expanding into the market share and gaining market share. Earlier, they had about 2,000 outlets, now it is 800 per quarter. You can imagine how fast this multiplicity will be and that caters to all needs.
