Indian households' net financial savings falls to 5.1% in FY23 from 11.5% in FY21 as liabilities rise
Indian households’ net financial savings fell as much as four percentage points in the past two years as they ploughed it to build real assets such as homes and vehicles. While that has raised the indebtedness of people, economists say their ability to service debt is high compared with many major economies. Official data on household net financial savings indicates that it fell to 5.1 per cent of GDP in 2022-23 from 11.5 per cent in 2020-21, well below its long-run annual average of 7.0-7.5 per cent.

State welfare spending purses get fatter in pre-election year
₹24 trillion. While the increase may not seem too high, especially in a pre-election year, it comes on the back of a 28% increase in 2022-23, when states had found themselves flush with funds following a recovery in economic activity after covid-19 lockdowns eased. However, the 9.2% overall increase in social sector spending conceals wide variations across states.

Irfan Razack, CMD, Prestige Estate, says “momentum will continue in the next financial year also. But again, it all depends on your location, the type of product, the type of pricing that you have on the product – that is what will give you success. Of course, the players who have delivered in the past, they have benefited, including our company and we have consistently focussed on delivery and that is what has given confidence to buyers to come to us to get their housing needs. Let us just talk about the overall demand environment and how it really has shaped up as we step into 2024. Do you believe that it is only likely to sustain? Give us an on-ground picture. Irfan Razack: Yes, the last three years have been pretty robust.

Rally in PSU stocks not over; we have completed one and entering another phase: Gaurav Bissa
Gaurav Bissa, VP, InCred Equities, says, “going forward, largecaps, especially larger banks like Kotak Bank and HDFC Bank will drive the markets going forward. So, the view remains positive. It is a buy-on-declines market. But the kind of move that we have seen from lower levels of 15,000 to higher levels of almost 22,000 that might not get repeated. But the overall sentiment will remain positive.” With 2023 coming to an end and markets gaining close to around 20% in this calendar year, what is your target for 2024 for Nifty? Gaurav Bissa: Our targets for mid-2024 were 21,000-21,500, those have been surpassed ferociously in 2023 itself. And now, I do not see we can have a similar kind of upside where in six months we can have 2,000-3,000 points coming in, even more than that. But yes, more towards 22,500 cannot be ruled out on the higher end. 20,000 is where Nifty can head towards. And largecaps will now take a front seat at least for next few months, where we have seen a very robust upside in midcaps and smallcaps.

AI can make art that feels human. Whose fault is that?
artificial intelligence went from a dreamy projection to an ambient menace and perpetual sales pitch. Does it feel like the future to you, or has AI already taken on the staleness and scamminess of the now-worthless non-fungible token? Artists have been deploying AI technologies for a while, after all: Ed Atkins, Martine Syms, Ian Cheng and Agnieszka Kurant have made use of neural networks and large language models for years, and orchestras were playing AI-produced Bach variations back in the 1990s. I suppose there was something nifty the first time I tried ChatGPT — a slightly more sophisticated grandchild of Eliza, the '60s therapist chatbot — though I've barely used it since then; the hallucinatory falsehoods of ChatGPT make it worthless for journalists, and even its tone seems an insult to my humanity. (I asked: «Who was the better painter, Manet or Degas?» Response: «It is not appropriate to compare artists in terms of 'better' or 'worse,' as art is a highly subjective field.»)
