Rajnath Singh appeals people to contribute to Armed Forces Flag Day Fund
Rajnath Singh appealed to the people to wholeheartedly donate to the Armed Forces Flag Day (AFFD) Fund and become a part of the government's endeavour to ensure the welfare of the 'Veer Naris', ex-servicemen and their families, said a press release by the Ministry of Defence on Thursday. In a message on AFFD, which is celebrated on December 7, Rajnath Singh termed it the moral responsibility of every citizen to contribute to the efforts being made by the Ministry of Defence towards the care, assistance, rehabilitation and treatment of veterans, war widows and their dependents through a number of welfare schemes. «It is our collective duty to ensure that they get due recognition from all of us,» he said. The Defence Minister emphasised that the soldiers safeguard the borders with discipline, dedication and patriotism, besides making a valuable contribution to relief and rescue operations during natural and man-made disasters as well as peacekeeping missions across the globe, said the official statement by the Ministry of Defence. Rajnath Singh also paid tribute to the brave soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice in the service of the motherland, with many becoming physically disabled to protect the unity, integrity and sovereignty of the nation. He exhorted the people to ensure their contribution to the AFFD Fund and inspire others to join this noble cause. On the occasion, Minister of State in the Ministry of Defence, Ajay Bhatt, also extended his best wishes to the armed forces personnel, ex-servicemen and their families. He stated that the AFFD provides an opportunity for the people to express gratitude to the gallant soldiers who are always ready to protect the country.

Rate Cut
Can India's central bank be a lone wolf on policy measures as US mulls rate cut?
Reserve Bank of India’s rate-setting panel on December 6 commenced the fifth meeting this financial year. India’s relatively favourable macroeconomic indicators give the central bank even more confidence to chart its own path, even as it remains wary of worrying external factors. Retail inflation eased from a four-month-high in October at 4.87 per cent while India’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate trumped analyst expectations in Q2FY24 at 7.8 per cent. The Monetary Policy Committee’s priority is clear, as said by the RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das, inflation over growth and draining out excess liquidity from the system. To this extent, the RBI is expected to keep benchmark lending rates unchanged, for the fifth straight time. The MPC’s decisions have been in stark contrast to some advanced economies, who continue their fight to tame sticky price pressures. Moreover, MPC members have perhaps afforded doing so as it has enjoyed optimism on certain high-frequency indicators in the fastest growing major economy, while key global economies are sailing in rough seas.

Raise domestic financing to fund climate action projects: IMF’s Georgieva
Edited excerpts: Yes, it is difficult in a world that has gone from one shot to another with the consequence being fiscal space in countries has shrunk in some countries. The fight against inflation means that interest rates are high, and for countries with a high level of debt that eats up resources. On top of it, with advanced economies now moving towards industrial policy and green subsidies—which overall is a good track to accelerate decarbonization—they become more attractive for private investors because it’s easier to invest in the developed world.

India among 8 nations seeking 5-year patent waiver for Covid diagnostics
In a submission to the World Trade Organization, they said that diagnostics and therapeutics are «essential tools for a comprehensive approach to fight the pandemic, that it is not over». The submission, made on behalf of 65 WTO members on Monday, came after the US refrained from taking sides in extending the waiver, which is applicable to Covid-19 vaccines only. For almost two years, India, South Africa and 80 other WTO members have sought a response for future pandemics through exceptions in the Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) agreement but the ministerial outcome of 2022 (MC12) only covered Covid-19 vaccines, with the US delaying an outcome on therapeutics and diagnostics. «The MC12 Decision on the TRIPS agreement is extended mutatis mutandis for the production and supply of Covid-19 therapeutics and diagnostics,» India and others said in the draft decision text on Monday. They asked the WTO to promptly respond to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and the challenge of inequitable access to therapeutics and diagnostics, and «respond to the criticism that the decision on vaccines came too little too late». Extension of the policy tools to therapeutics and diagnostics will result in a holistic approach to enable developing countries to address those intellectual property (IP) barriers that prevent the expansion and diversification of production and increase accessibility to crucial life-saving Covid-19 tools, they said. As per the draft text, «omitting these vital tools» will deter the effectiveness of the decision that aims timely and affordable access to effective vaccines against the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. The submission assumes significance as last week, the UK, the EU, the US,
