Govt wants to bring dictatorship: Sibal slams bills to replace criminal laws
Bill as «unconstitutional», former law minister Kapil Sibal on Sunday alleged that the government talks about ending colonial-era laws but their thinking is that they want to «bring dictatorship» through such legislations. The Rajya Sabha MP called on the government to take back the three bills it has brought to replace the Indian Penal Code, 1860, Criminal Procedure Act, 1898, and Indian Evidence Act, 1872, alleging that if such laws become a reality, they would «imperil the future» of the country. «They (NDA government) talk about ending colonial era laws, but their thinking is that they want to bring dictatorship in the country through laws.

Charting the global economy: US stays on moderate-inflation path, deflation in China raises concerns
inflation continued along a path of moderation that is bolstering prospects for an economic soft landing, while across the globe in China, consumer and producer prices fell in tandem. The US core consumer price index, a closely watched measure of underlying inflation, posted the smallest back-to-back advances since early 2021 and suggested central bankers will hold off raising interest rates next month. Meantime, deflation in China is a worrisome sign for global economic growth. Lending by Chinese banks last month was the weakest in more than a decade, further evidence of weak demand. Here are some of the charts that appeared on Bloomberg this week on the latest developments in the global economy:

Cricket: Indian team management has a lot of unanswered questions
ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk, Chennai. Between this day and that day, Rohit Sharma and Co. will partake in a maximum of nine ODI games – six in the Asia Cup if India qualify for the final and three against visiting Australia. The Asia Cup, starting August 30, would provide a lot more clarity as to who will be burdened with the responsibility of bringing the Cup home. (Err! The World Cup is being held in India, but, hopefully, you got the drift.) But before that, Indian team management has a lot of important questions to address.HOLE IN THE MIDDLE Three players – KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant — who would have been a guarantee in the playing XI, have been injured for a while and are at different stages of recovery. Rahul and Iyer have good chances of getting fit in time for the World Cup, but will they be in prime shape, both physically and form-wise, to be trusted for such a big tournament? Pant, on the other hand, needs a miracle to make himself available for the World Cup. Even if he manages to perform the miracle, will he be ready? This has left Indian team management with a giant task of filling giant holes in the batting line-up.SURYA NOT SHINING BRIGHT Indian team management seems desperate for Suryakumar Yadav to bring his menacing 360-degree play, with which has taken the T20 cricket by storm, to the ODIs.

Pakistan likely to lose GSP Plus status

In the year 2020, 28 per cent of Pakistan's total exports to the EU were duty-free thanks to its GSP Plus status, and 78 per cent of these exports went to the EU.

New uniform pattern in Lakshadweep schools: Congress warns of intense protest
Lakshadweep administration's move to introduce a new pattern of uniform in schools in the union territory and warned them of intense protests, including mass class boycott by students against it. Lakshadweep Congress leader and ex-MP Hamdullah Sayeed alleged that the new dress code directive, which is silent on hijabs or scarves for girl students, amounted to destroying the intrinsic culture and lifestyle of islanders in the Muslim-dominated archipelago. The BJP-led government at the Centre and the Lakshadweep administration were continuously attempting to implement anti-people policies that were totally against the culture and ethos of the islands, he charged.
