Vigilance Bureau books Punjab's ex-finance minister Manpreet Badal, five others in land buying case
Punjab Vigilance Bureau has registered a case against former state finance minister Manpreet Singh Badal and five others in connection with alleged irregularities in the purchase of a property in Bathinda, a top official said on Monday. Apart from Badal, who is now a BJP leader, and former Bathinda municipal corporation commissioner Bikramjit Shergill, the other four booked in the case on Sunday night have been identified as Rajiv Kumar, Amandeep Singh, Vikas Arora and Pankaj, the official said. Rajiv Kumar and Amandeep Singh have been arrested, the officer added. The bureau had launched an investigation into the matter based on former MLA Sarup Chand Singla's 2021 complaint alleging irregularities in the purchase of the property at a prime location in Bathinda. BJP leader Singla, who was earlier with the Shiromani Akali Dal, had alleged that Badal, as a minister in the previous Congress dispensation, had abused his position to convert commercial plots into a residential plot for himself. The case was registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including sections 420 (cheating) and 468 (forgery) and also under the Prevention of Corruption Act. During the investigation, the Vigilance Bureau had interrogated Badal in July.

Concord Biotech's niche strengths seen buoying earnings: Analysts
Concord Biotech's strong foothold in the niche segment of manufacturing active pharmaceutical ingredients through fermentation along with its capacity expansion and planned launches are seen underpinning strong earnings growth for the company over the next three to five years, analysts said. They see Concord Biotech's shares gaining 15-30% from the current levels as earnings per share are expected to see a compounded annual growth of about 27% over the next three years. Shares of the Ahmedabad-based biopharma company, which listed a few weeks ago at a more than 20% premium, have notched another 9% gain since then. The shares topped ₹1,000 in intraday trade on Friday, before closing nearly 2% higher on the NSE at ₹983.40. «Founded by a technocrat, Concord's focus lies on niche, high-value molecules across immunosuppressants, anti-infectives and oncology, wherein complex fermentation processes and difficulties in scaling up are key entry barriers,» said Kotak Institutional Equities. Pegging the company as «the fermentation expert», the brokerage has an 'add' rating for its shares for a target price of ₹ 1,110. While Concord is trading at a premium valuation compared with most of its listed peers, it also has superior profitability, and this is seen improving further.

LandCraft Retail has leased a commercial property owned by actor Salman Khan on Linking Road in Mumbai at a rental of ₹1 crore per month to open a new gourmet store, replacing Food Hall owned by debt-ridden Future Group. The new chain — Food Square — will compete with RP Sanjiv Goenka-owned Nature's Basket and Reliance Freshpik. «We are farmer-entrepreneurs-founders ourselves, running large-scale aquaponics and sustainable soil-based farms in different parts of Maharashtra for more than five years,» said Mayank Gupta, managing director and co-founder of Food Square. He added that the current valuation of the Indian gourmet food market at $1.3 billion with an annual compounded growth rate of 20% «makes it a promising arena». India, 79 others seek support for WTO food security deal
The alliance of G33, African Group and the ACP (African, Caribbean and Pacific) group at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) has proposed a new method to calculate subsidies given to purchase, stockpile and distribute food to ensure food security for developing and poor nations. It has also proposed that exports of foodgrains from public stocks to needy countries be allowed for international food aid and humanitarian purposes. The alliance is keen to get more support for its proposals, officials said. «The cosponsors of the proposal are reaching out to 6-7 LDCs and the Arab Group who have given support from the floor,» an official said. The coalition has suggested that a permanent solution for public stockholding should account for inflation and be based on a recent reference price. At present, the external reference price (ERP) used for calculating subsidies is based on 1986-88 prices. «Production of staples has been hit in many countries and they are now concerned about their food security.

India carrying out lot of construction activities at China border: BRO DG
India has been carrying out a lot of construction activities at the China border in the last three years, BRO Director General Lt General Rajeev Chaudhry said on Sunday. The DG was here to inspect the ongoing construction work of an air dispatch unit of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), touted to be the world's largest 3D concrete printed campus. Chaudhry said the government of India is fully supporting the BRO for carrying out infrastructure development projects by way of increasing the budget and new technology. The government of India has «increased our budget by 100 per cent in the last two years», he added. When asked if China is carrying out big infrastructure development near the border areas of India, the DG said that a lot of construction activities have been being carried out by the BRO and other agencies at the China border in the last three years. The DG said that around 300 BRO projects worth Rs 8,000 crore were completed during the last few years. «In the last three years, we set up 295 road projects, bridges, tunnels and airfields which were dedicated to the nation,» Chaudhry said. «In four months, our 60 more projects will be ready and the pace of our work has increased,» he added. The DG said that the BRO was using steel slag — a by-product of steel — and plastic in the construction of roads. «Today, the BRO's pace of work is quite fast and the government has complete support in it, be it the budget, machines, new technology and simplification of procedures.
