Haryana polls: From kingmaker to king, JJP's Dushyant Chautala sets eyes on bigger goal
JJP leader Dushyant Chautala, whose party is contesting the October 5 Haryana assembly polls jointly with Azad Samaj Party, predicts a hung assembly but exudes confidence that their alliance will win enough seats to emerge as a key player after the results. The JJP had won 10 of the 90 assembly seats in the 2019 Haryana assembly polls, the BJP 40 and the Congress 31. Chautala, 36, the great grandson of former deputy prime minister Devi Lal, predicts that no single party will be able to cross the 40-seat mark in the assembly elections. No single party can form government on its own. There are chances that nobody crosses the 40-seat mark. So, there will be parties with numbers and some Independents too who will win, former deputy chief minister Chautala told PTI.

Congress Committee chief Tariq Hamid Karra on Friday said BJP is touchy and exploitative about Article 370 and this is why Congress is focusing on restoration of statehood with all the rights for locals over land, jobs and admissions to educational institutions. Congress and National Conference have entered into a pre-poll seat-sharing arrangement in the 90-seat assembly, under which NC is contesting 51 seats and Congress 32 seats. Five seats will see a friendly contest, and two seats have been reserved for CPIM in Kashmir and Panthers Party in Jammu.

Problem of affluence: Low official survey response rate
government surveys has doubled over the last five years, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) said Friday. Highlighting the lack of cooperation from high income households living in gated communities, it said that an ‘income category’-wise analysis of the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES) data showed that non-responsiveness in the ‘high income’ category of urban areas grew to 11% in HCES 2022–23 from 3.3% in 2011–12. The non-responsiveness among the high-income category in rural areas increased to 3.9% from 1.3% in the same time period. A rising non-response rate has the potential to reduce the sample size of the government’s surveys and impact the accuracy of the official estimates.
