Abandoning RBI's inflation target regime could be risky, counterproductive: Research paper
RBI's) inflation targeting regime has worked well and need not be abandoned in favour of a more discretionary regime that could be risky and counterproductive, a new research paper has said. The paper titled 'Inflation Targeting In India: A Further Assessment' said the weight of food-price inflation in the CPI inflation basket should be reduced to better reflect the circumstances of Indian households. «The RBI's inflation targeting regime has worked well. Given this record, radical changes such as broadening its mandate or abandoning the target in favour of a more discretionary regime would be risky and counterproductive,» it said. The paper is authored by economists Barry Eichengreen (University of California, Berkeley) and Poonam Gupta (NCAER).

Monetary policy must be disinflationary to quell these price pressures: RBI bulletin
RBI) may need to continue with disinflationary monetary policy and it has to remain cautious as the pressure stemming from persistently high food prices is spilling over into other components of inflation and shaping household perceptions on prices, a central bank article said. «Food price shocks may lie outside the realm of monetary policy, but when they result in food inflation acquiring persistence and spilling over into other components of inflation and into consumer behaviour, the monetary policy must be disinflationary to quell these price pressures in order to achieve its mandate of price stability and thereby retain credibility,» deputy governor Michael Debabrata Patra said in the article, co-authored by Joice John and Asish Thomas George. They said that the country is facing the danger of losing the beneficial effects of low core inflation if food prices cannot be anchored. Core inflation has been restrained through monetary policy tightening.

Trademark infringement: Burger King loses legal battle against namesake Pune eatery
Burger King Corporation has lost a 13-year-old legal battle against its namesake eatery in Maharashtra's Pune after a district court dismissed a suit filed by the company alleging trademark infringement. Pune district judge Sunil Vedpathak, in the order on August 16, said the city-based eatery 'Burger King' was operating even before the US burger joint opened shop in India and that the latter failed to prove the local food outlet had infringed its trademark. The court dismissed the 2011 suit filed by the Burger King Corporation, seeking a permanent injunction restraining infringement of trademark, passing off (the trademark as theirs), as well as monetary damages. The suit, filed against Anahita Irani and Shapoor Irani, owners of the Pune-based Burger King food joint, also sought Rs 20 lakh as damages.

High food inflation could exacerbate inequality: Kaushik Basu
Kaushik Basu on Saturday said India needs to tame inflation that disproportionately affects people who spend a large chunk of their income on food and could exacerbate inequality. «Even if inflation is at 5.1%, food inflation is at 30%. For someone spending 50% of their income on food, that 30% food inflation is hitting them significantly harder despite government programmes like PM Gareeb Kalyan Yojana providing some relief,» Basu said at a Delhi School of Economics event to mark its 75 years of existence. Basu, who served as the chief economic advisor to the central government under the United Progressive Alliance regime, also underscored the importance of the next 10-15 years for lower middle-income category countries such as India to unleash the demand for labour.

The gross hirings included attrition-linked replacement of about 118,000 employees and a net addition of 34,000, according to the survey conducted by specialist staffing firm Xpheno for ET, tracking data from 125 global capability centres (GCCs) that account for nearly three-fourths of India's total GCC headcount of 1.6 million. GCCs in semiconductor manufacturing, oil & gas and food & beverage services accounted for the largest number of net additions, both in the first half of 2024 and in the 12 months ended June 30, 2024, the survey has found.

Going to Lisbon? It's a crime to not eat Pastel de Nata
Is it pasta-de Nadal — a pasta liked by the tennis maestro? I started reading the phrase 'Pastel de Nata' in a couple of British food columns. I still wasn't paying attention, so I continued to think this PdN was a) Spanish, b) a savoury. Then I read some descriptions that identified it as 'a sweedish item', as my school mess manager used to call desserts and puddings. Finally, I understood that this 'Swedish' item was Portuguese. Last year in Oxford, I saw something called a pasteleria — Portuguese for bakery — had opened, and there was a long queue outside. Walking past it one day, I saw the queue wasn't there so I leapt in. 'Hi, can I please have one of those...?'
