Open letter slamming FCA email policy for 'alarming lack of consultation' sent to regulator and government
The regulator told employees earlier this year that, as of 1 April, all emails will automatically be deleted after a year unless staff take specific steps to retain them. In the letter published today (20 March), a cohort made up of CEOs and senior directors from companies such as Positive Money, Sharesoc and the Tax Justice Network, argued that the FCA's policy would harm the rights of consumers, reduce the efficacy of the regulator, and damage the UK financial sector's reputation. FCA addresses criticism on plan to auto-delete staff emails after a year Freedom of Information requ...

World Happiness Report: Why Americans aren't happy—survey reveals the reason
According to UN-backed report, released Thursday, Finland maintained its position as the world's happiest nation for the eighth consecutive year, with its extensive lakes and robust social welfare system cited as key factors by residents and specialists. Afghanistan, facing severe humanitarian challenges since the Taliban's 2020 return to power, remained at the bottom of the global happiness rankings. The US descended to position 24, its poorest showing since the report's inception in 2012, when it had achieved its peak ranking of 11th place. One of the biggest reason for the fall in happiness of Americans, according to the report, is eating meals alone. «The number of people dining alone in the United States has increased 53 percent over the past two decades,» the authors stated, highlighting that shared meals «is strongly linked with well-being». Data from 2023 showed approximately 25% of Americans consumed all their daily meals alone.

Vageshwari Properties buys South Mumbai's Laxmi Nivas for Rs 276 crore
Vageshwari Properties, an entity that counts Reliance Industries' board member and executive director Nikhil Meswani's wife Elina as a director, has acquired Laxmi Nivas, an iconic bungalow located on south Mumbai's plush Nepean Sea Road, for over ₹276 crore. The over 120-year-old sea-view property situated diagonally opposite the Russian consulate has a total built up area of nearly 19,892 sq ft spanning across ground plus two upper floors. The sellers had acquired the bungalow spread over around half-an-acre from a Parsi family for about ₹1.2 lakh in 1917. The bungalow, built in 1904, holds significant historical importance, having served as a safe house for prominent freedom fighters during the 1940s Quit India movement. Notable figures such as Ram Manohar Lohia, Jayaprakash Narayan, Achyut Patwardhan and Aruna Asaf Ali sought refuge here. It also functioned as a broadcasting centre for Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose's Azad Hind Radio during this period.

China, Russia eager to fill void as Trump axes US-funded media
Trump moves to axe Voice of America and other US-funded media, China and Russia are eager to fill the void. The targeting of VOA, Radio Free Europe and Radio Free Asia not only freezes some of the most dogged reporting on countries with heavily restricted media, but it comes after years of concerted efforts by Beijing and Moscow to promote their own worldview on the global media landscape. Trump issued an executive order Friday to pare down the nearly $1 billion US Agency for Global Media, with hundreds of journalists swiftly put on leave or fired, in his latest sweeping cut to the federal government. Lisa Curtis, who was a senior official on the National Security Council in Trump's first term and serves as board chair of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, formed in the Cold War to reach behind the Iron Curtain, said that closing the service «will actually help our adversaries.» «Countries like China, Russia and Iran are investing hundreds of millions of dollars pumping out anti-American propaganda and disinformation,» she said.

S Jaishankar on Tuesday stressed the importance of having an international order just like a domestic order. He slammed the United Nations for making the Kashmir invasion a dispute and turning the attacker and victim at par and called for having a «strong and fair» UN. In his remarks at the Session on 'Thrones and Thorns: Defending the Integrity of Nations' at Raisina Dialogue on Tuesday, Jaishankar called the occupation of some parts of Kashmir by Pakistan «the longest standing illegal occupation» of territory by another country after the Second World War. Jaishankar said, «Let's give you a second example. We all speak of sovereignty and territorial integrity.

India alerted New Zealand on Khalistan issue, says Jaideep Mazumdar
Addressing the issue, Secretary (East) Jaideep Mazumdar in a special briefing of the Ministry of External Affairs stated, «About Khalistan, this was an issue that came up… We do alert our friends to the activities of anti-India elements in their countries and their abuse of freedom of speech and other democratic freedoms to glorify terrorism and to threaten attacks against our diplomats, our parliament or our events in India. So these were also conveyed. The government of New Zealand has been receptive and has taken our concerns on board in the past as well.» India has been vocal about its stance against separatist movements operating from foreign soil. The meeting with Luxon comes at a time when the Indian government has been urging international partners to take stronger action against individuals and groups involved in extremist activities. New Zealand has previously acknowledged such concerns, and India expects continued cooperation in addressing these threats. Meanwhile, India's concerns over Khalistani separatist activities are not limited to New Zealand. Recently, India formally raised the issue with the United Kingdom following a security breach during External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's visit to London. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, «We have conveyed our deep concern to the UK authorities about the breach of security arrangements by UK-based separatist and extremist elements during EAM's visit.»

DeepSeek founder, who shook US tech giants' supremacy, prefers humanities graduates over techies
DeepSeek, a leading AI company, is taking an unconventional approach to hiring under the leadership of CEO Liang Wenfeng. Unlike many tech companies that prioritize candidates with extensive technical expertise, Liang focuses on creativity, intellectual curiosity, and diverse perspectives. His strategy places an emphasis on hiring Generation Z, avid readers, and humanities graduates, believing that imaginative thinking is more valuable than years of experience. During a 2023 interview with Chinese media outlet 36Kr, Liang explained his approach. “When aiming for rapid results, it makes sense to hire those who already possess the necessary expertise,” he said. “However, for long-term ambitions, experience holds less significance. Core competencies, an inventive mindset, and an unwavering passion for the work are attributes I value above all else.” His perspective challenges the industry norm, where companies like OpenAI and Meta favor candidates with strong technical backgrounds. Liang, however, sees open-mindedness and a willingness to explore unconventional solutions as more critical for addressing complex AI challenges.

Syria's 5-year transition to hinge on Islamic law
Syria kept a central role for Islamic law in a constitutional declaration issued on Thursday which guarantees women's rights and freedom of expression during a five-year transitional period, according to a summary read on TV. The declaration is designed to serve as the foundation for the interim period being led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa, a Sunni Islamist who spearheaded a lightning offensive that toppled Bashar al-Assad from power in December. Islamic jurisprudence will be «the main source» of legislation, according to the summary read out during the signing ceremony. That seemed to differ from the previous constitution which called it «a main source» of legislation. «We have kept Islamic jurisprudence as the primary source of legislation among sources of legislation,» said the summary, read out by a member of the committee which drafted the declaration. Sharaa had appointed the panel less than two weeks ago. Sharaa, who has promised to run Syria in an inclusive way, has been grappling with the biggest test of his leadership in the wake of a wave of sectarian killing in the coastal region, blamed on fighters aligned with his government.
