Regulatory norms on F&O should evolve based on continuous market feedback: Sundararaman Ramamurthy
«Also, risks do not materialise only in weekend. It happens every day. If there is a product to attract global risks on Monday, then if there is something materialising in between, it is a meaningful gap there should be another product,» says Sundararaman Ramamurthy, MD & CEO, BSE. What are the potential risks to the market ecosystem when there is a concentration of trading activity on a single expiry day? Sundararaman Ramamurthy: The regulator gave the option for selecting one expiry day by the exchanges. The regulators absolutely, of course, would have applied their mind for giving this option. NSE opted to continue for Thursday. Based on market feedback, we shifted it to Tuesday. Market feedback had a rationale for it. When you have a common expiry, an existing mature product trades more and no other product can enter in.

Supreme Court disapproves 'long dates' in matters of liberty
Supreme Court on Thursday said courts were not expected to keep the matters concerning liberty after a long gap. A bench of Justices B R Gavai and Augustine George Masih made the observation after being informed that the Punjab and Haryana High Court posted the hearing of a plea for temporary bail on medical grounds after two months. The petitioner's counsel said he had approached the high court for the grant of temporary bail on the ground that her client's two-year-old daughter needed urgent surgery. The lawyer argued the high court, in its order passed on February 21, posted the matter on April 22.

Sanjay H Parekh optimistic about earnings revival, foresees strong market recovery in coming months
«In the interim, flows can have some excesses, but we really feel that we have reached the bottom on Nifty. You can never say never, but largely we think we are done. Because even if you take earnings post downgrades, broadly next year will be 1200 rupees of earnings and 26-27 would be 1350 rupees of earnings,» says Sanjay H Parekh, Sohum Asset Managers. Give us a lowdown on where you feel the markets are headed from here. Do you think we have bottomed out enough because we had slipped below that 22,000 mark initially in the first half of the trading day? We have managed to recover only nominally from there. But do you believe that this is the worst for the market and now would be a good time for FIIs and along with them some confidence to return in the market? Sanjay H Parekh: So, essentially, our product is Nifty benchmark where we have at least 70% always in largecap. In fact, our average largecap holding has been 78%. So, I will just give you a perspective of how we think about Nifty to begin with. So, we think now the risk-return is really favourable.

Can Europe keep Ukraine in the fight if America really has bailed?
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. After America announced on March 3rd that it is suspending military aid to Ukraine, it looks increasingly likely that Ukraine will have to depend on Europe. Donald Trump might be persuaded to reverse the suspension, for instance if Volodymyr Zelensky agrees to sign a deal on its minerals industry.

Is Europe ready to break free from US security dependence?
trans-Atlantic security. As evident, the Trump administration is unlikely to commit to a security framework in Europe where it pits Washington against Moscow. In fact, Washington is demonstrably against security commitments abroad, to the extent that its age-old commitments under Nato now hang in the balance. What is certain, though, is that any road to getting Washington's security commitments is likely to involve a large economic component. As such, the semblance of an offer that the US has put on the table for Ukraine as a guarantee against Moscow is a mineral deal without any explicit security guarantees. Clearly, this approach may not be acceptable to most countries, certainly not to Ukraine. An immediate repercussion of Washington's security recoil has been the beginning of an almost pan-European consensus on the need to step up and fill potential gaps that could emerge as a result. Most European leaders appeared bound in a consensus to carve a new security assurance for Ukraine, except this time without the US. France, Germany and Britain, along with the EU as a bloc, depicted existential urgency at Sunday's leaders' European security summit in London, knowing that the block may have to take charge of not just its own security but also negotiations on part of Ukraine.

Kaushik Das: Expect another RBI rate cut in support of economic growth

In a widely anticipated move to balance the objectives of growth and inflation, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) reduced its repo rate by 25 basis points (bps) to 6.25% at the 7 February meeting of its Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), which voted unanimously for this cut. This reflects a proactive but calibrated approach to support an economic recovery, while staying focused on gradually aligning Consumer Price Index inflation with its mandated target of 4%.

India's skill gap crisis: Plenty of graduates, not enough leaders for emerging tech
As India Inc looks to leverage new technologies, the widening skills gap is a growing concern.
