Google, Meta urge Australia to delay bill on social media ban for children
Google and Facebook-owner Meta Platforms urged the Australian government on Tuesday to delay a bill that will ban most forms of social media for children under 16, saying more time was needed to assess its potential impact. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's centre-left government wants to pass the bill, which represents some of the toughest controls on children's social media use imposed by any country, into law by the end of the parliamentary year on Thursday. The bill was introduced in parliament last week and opened for submissions of opinions for only one day.

Microfinance sector tightens lending norms to address asset quality stress
Microfinance Institutions Network (MFIN), one of the two self-regulatory organisations for the sector, has decided to implement a stricter set of guardrails for its members to help them overcome the severe asset quality stress that they are subjected to at present. The new norms, when implemented, are expected to squeeze the quantum of credit delivery to customers at the bottom of the income pyramid and reduce their over-indebtedness, which has been at the heart of the present sectoral crisis. MFIN has requested its members to stop lending to delinquent customers who have overdue loans for more than 60 days with an outstanding amount more than Rs 3000. The existing industry norm was not lending to a client with overdue for more than 90 days with more than Rs 3000. If a loan is not serviced for 90 days, it is classified as non-performing.

After defeat, Uddhav Thackeray's demands fresh polls through paper ballots
Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray Sena in a bizarre demand has asked to stay the assembly results and hold fresh elections through paper ballots. “ We have made 450 complaints against the EVM machines in these elections, the elections were conducted as per procedure. We are saying that stall these results and do the elections from paper ballots and we would win the elections. We were leading in the morning in the paper ballots in these elections early but then when the counting in the EVM happened things changed.”said Sanjay Raut Rajya Sabha MP and party spokesperson of the Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray Sena. Raut claimed that they want elections to be held through paper ballots. “We are not saying this because we lost, we have been saying against EVM for the last ten years. Now they (BJP) claim that they won in Jharkhand and lost in Maharashtra but we would like to tell them to do one thing: take Jharkhand and let us win in Maharashtra. Do something in the EVM machine and let us win in Maharashtra.”said Raut sarcastically.

How Google spent 15 years creating a culture of concealment
Yahoo and confronted lawsuits involving patent, trademark and copyright claims, its executives sent out a confidential memo. «We believe that information is good,» the executives told employees in the memo. But, they added, government regulators or competitors might seize on words that Google workers casually, thoughtlessly, wrote to one another. To minimise the odds that a lawsuit could flush out comments that might be incriminating, Google said, employees should refrain from speculation and sarcasm and «think twice» before writing to one another about «hot topics». The technology was tweaked, too. The setting for the company's instant messaging tool was changed to «off the record». An incautious phrase would be wiped the next day.

Google Research India head disagrees with Nandan Nilekani, says India must build LLMs
Google Research India head Manish Gupta has disagreed with Infosys chairman Nandan Nilekani's comments that ‘India should not invest in building foundational models.’ Gupta, speaking at the Bengaluru Tech Summit held between November 19-21, firmly disagreed with Nilekani and said, “There’s a technologist that I deeply respect, Nandan Nilekani, who made this statement: India should forget about foundation model building, just focus on the use cases. And I would say, with the person I respect, I respectfully disagree.” Nilekani is credited with helming world's largest unique identity programme with Aadhaar. The Google research head countered, saying India should invest in foundational AI models or Large Language Models (LLMs). “I think he’s (Nandan Nilekani) wrong because he’s not preaching what he has practised. What he did, he revolutionised India’s technology landscape by starting with the basics for Aadhaar. He didn’t start with use cases. He started with foundations. So, I think we must start with foundations.”

Reliance's refining margins recover but retail remains uncertain
Reliance Industries Ltd's recent underperformance — weak refining margin — has reversed but the other, poor-retail top-line growth, is difficult to anticipate, brokerage JP Morgan said in a report. Reliance stock is down 22 per cent from its peak on July 8 (NIFTY down 3.3 per cent), sharply reversing outperformance from earlier in the year. In a market where most stocks are trading well above historical valuations, Reliance's fair relative valuations are an attraction. The company helmed by billionaire Mukesh Ambani has three main business verticals — oil refining and petrochemical business housed in oil-to-chemical (O2C) unit, telecom arm Jio and retail. It also has a media unit and a new energy business.
