Telcos roll out festive offers to retain top prepaid users
Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea (Vi) have unveiled a host of limited-period offers that bundle generous dollops of extra data, over-the-top (OTT) streaming apps, gift vouchers and extended pack validity to hold on to their top-end, revenue-generating prepaid users, in the aftermath of the recent headline rate hikes. A day after Jio offered additional benefits worth ₹700 on its ₹899, ₹999 and ₹3,599 prepaid packs as part of its eighth anniversary offer, Airtel and Vi on Friday rolled out their own competitive festive offers to counter Jio amid rising competition in the battle to retain revenue-generating prepaid users. The latest battle to retain high-value prepaid users between India's top three telcos comes even as loss-making Vi itself is struggling to hold onto its own users. Vi's stock plunged almost 11.5% to close at ₹13.36 on the BSE on Friday, just days after its revenue market share (RMS) plummeted to an all-time low of 15% in the fiscal first quarter, as per latest data collated by the telecom regulator.

Investment platforms rejoice as Labour looks to scrap GB ISA plans
According to the FT, Labour is planning to abandon the current GB ISA campaign, a U-turn on its election pledge when a Labour spokesperson said the party had «no plans to drop the British ISA». The GB ISA was a headline policy of the former government's Spring Budget, and was proposed as a way to boost retail investment in the UK market, with account holders given an additional £5,000 a year to invest solely in UK companies. This would have been in addition to the current annual ISA allowance of £20,000. 'Helpful change' or 'political stunt'?: The debate on the Great British ISA an...

Two wheels, too many colours: The cycle of political fights in Indian states
Rajasthan's Education Minister, Madan Dilawar, made headlines by announcing that the bicycles distributed to schoolgirls will switch from black to saffron. Dilawar explained that there’s no special reason behind changing the colour of the bicycles. However, he pointed out that during the previous BJP government in Rajasthan, the bicycles were saffron. When the Congress came to power, they changed the colour to black. Dilawar emphasised that saffron is a symbol of valour and bravery, recalling that patriots wore this colour during India’s independence movement. «With this thought in mind, we have decided to change the colour to saffron,» he said. The free bicycle scheme in Rajasthan started in 2009 to help girls stay in school, as many drop out in Class 9 due to transportation issues. Over 7 lakh girls are eligible for these bicycles, and the government also provides a travel allowance to those living within three to five kilometres of their school.

BJP launches membership drive, seeks to tap youth, women, aspirational sections
Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged upon them to undertake the party’s membership drive with renewed vigor and in a festive spirit. He emphasized that fresh blood in the organization should come from the youth, women and those living in tribal and aspirational blocks in the hinterland while the exercise should begin from areas where the party has done badly in the polls. BJP launched its ambitious membership drive, which includes renewal of association of those already in the party, here on Monday with organisation’s chief JP Nadda making Modi the first member through a missed call to a dedicated number. As per Article 9 of the BJP constitution, the membership has to be renewed every six years. In his speech, Modi said BJP has grown from a fledging party that faced a lot of ridicule in its initial days due to its poor strength to where it stands today. He recalled the struggles and sacrifices of generations of party workers. The journey, he underlined, has been not just ideological but emotional as well.

CEA: No inflation targeting framework is sacrosanct
The Economic Survey for 2023-24 questioned the merits of India’s inflation targeting regime, which aims at a headline inflation rate of 4% with a band of 2% on either side. It mused aloud whether a regime that targets inflation, excluding food prices, would be more appropriate in the Indian context, especially given the unintended effect it has on farmers’ terms of trade. Some have opined that it is a settled issue and there is no point in opening it up.
