AI's ability to predict death may not be as scary as it sounds
When headlines recently said that artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to create a ‘death calculator’ that predicts the day you’ll die, it sounded like something from a terrifying science fiction story. The reaction showed how readily people believe that AI has magical fortune-telling powers. The reality was not as far-fetched.

ETMarkets Smart Talk: Indian market not in a ‘bubble’; Decadal rally can be seen in realty, internet companies: Harendra Kumar
“The Nifty was ~18400 in Oct 2021 and is now up just 20% from those levels and largely tracking earnings. One can hardly call that a bubble,” says Harendra Kumar, Managing Director, Head-Institutional Equities & Global Research, Elara Securities India. In an interview with ETMarkets, Kumar who has over 20 years of experience in financial markets said: “New age internet companies, Real Estate, financiers and wealth managers – will see a good decadal rally,” Edited excerpts: We have seen quite a bit of volatility in markets post-budget but the good news is that Nifty managed to hold on to crucial support levels. What is your take on markets – is it profit-taking after the recent run-up? Harendra Kumar: For the headline index – we see no risk, as there has been hardly price appreciation in the headline index.

Real interest rates above 2% may not be sustainable from growth perspective: Shashanka Bhide
Durable, high GDP growth requires inflation to be under control but real interest rates above 2% may not be sustainable when it comes to supporting the growth needs of the Indian economy, said Shashanka Bhide, member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the Reserve Bank of India. If one goes by the MPC's projection of 4.5% average inflation in FY25, the prevailing policy repo rate of 6.5% translates into a real interest rate of 2%. Edited excerpts of an interview with ET: In your view, what is an appropriate level of real interest rate that pushes inflation back to target while ensuring that growth is supported? With the policy rate as the instrument, there is a trade-off in terms of growth while bringing down the inflation rate to the target. However, a moderate inflation rate is also needed to achieve sustained high growth. While real interest rates above 2% may not be sustainable from a growth perspective, the persistence of inflation above the target is also unacceptable in the present framework.

Yohan Poonawalla buys Queen Elizabeth II’s Range Rover in private transaction
British royal history. So, no sooner had an online resale announcement been made for the late Queen Elizabeth II’s Range Rover, than industrialist Yohan Poonawalla acquired it. Though not exactly a crown jewel, the car is unique in many ways — even flaunting the registration number used by the Queen, an unusual scheme of things. “I am delighted to have acquired this remarkable piece of automotive history,” said Poonawalla, managing director, Poonawalla Group. “Once a car leaves the royal household, the number plate changes. What is unique about this car is the fact that it still retains the same registration number, OU16 XVH, as used by the late Queen. (That has) turned out to be an added bonus.”
