Investors remember ‘stocks can go down’ in return to hedging
Hedging is back as investors fret over concerns about everything from the US presidential election to second-quarter earnings, economic growth and interest rates. The Cboe Volatility Index, a gauge of options prices, surged the most in more than a year last week as stocks sank with growing calls for Joseph Biden to quit the presidential race. Now that he's done so and thrown US politics into uncharted territory, futures on the gauge have slipped after earlier climbing as much as 1.8% in Asian trading. October contracts, which measure swings around the vote, rose even more in Hong Kong.

Former Bihar Congress president Anil Sharma quits
Congress in Bihar ahead of Lok Sabha polls, former state president Anil Sharma on Sunday quit the party, claiming that it was stuck in a «disastrous» partnership with the RJD. Making the announcement at a press conference here, Sharma also voiced disgust over the recent induction, «with much fanfare», of controversial former MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav. «Today, the party leadership is busy with a rally in Delhi where it is talking of the need to save democracy. Sadly, though, no democracy can be seen in the Congress where even our duly elected national president can take no step without consulting Rahul Gandhi or his close aide KC Venugopal,» alleged Sharma. Sharma became the fourth former Bihar Congress president to have quit the party in nearly a decade. The latest instance was that of Ashok Chaudhary, who quit the party and joined JD(U) in 2018, a few months after a factional feud caused him to give up the state president's post.

Chirag Paswan's party to declare Lok Sabha poll candidates 'immediately' after Holi
NDA ally Chirag Paswan said his Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) will declare its candidates for the Lok Sabha polls immediately after Holi. Paswan, whose party has got five of the 40 Lok Sabha seats in Bihar, also asserted he was «ready for any challenge» that came from his estranged uncle Pashupati Kumar Paras. «We will announce all our candidates in a few days… immediately after Holi,» Paswan said on Sunday, but evaded a direct reply to the question of whether he would accommodate Veena Devi and Mehboob Ali Kaiser, sitting MPs from Vaishali and Khagaria, respectively. Both the seats, contested by his late father Ram Vilas Paswan's Lok Janshakti Party in 2019, have been assigned to the young leader's party this time. The MPs had rallied behind Paras when he split the LJP in 2021, but of late have been repenting that decision and swearing their loyalty towards the late party founder's son.

Mediocres, brokers promoted in the name of art and culture in Jammu and Kashmir: Senior artists
artists expressed concern over the promotion of brokers and philistines in the name of art and culture in Jammu and Kashmir while senior artists, who have devoted their entire lives for excellence in this field, are ignored. A group of senior artists and singers met in Srinagar and lamented that the tourism and culture departments don't invite senior artists for programs over the past few years and there is an apathy for them within the system. They claimed that some of these artists were engaged for over a month for the G-20 meeting in May this year and the payments are still pending.

Stock pickers sidelined with world events overshadowing earnings
Earnings season typically is the time when investors can look past macroeconomic forces and focus on company-specific news moving stocks. This quarter, however, is turning out to be anything but typical. Individual shares have, of course, reacted to earnings announcements in the week or so since Corporate America started reporting results. But conflict in the Middle East and surging Treasury yields are taking precedence, causing S&P 500 Index constituents to increasingly move in unison as global events sway markets broadly. In four of the six trading sessions since the reporting cycle kicked off on Oct. 13, at least 400 members in the S&P 500 have moved in the same direction. It’s a frequency that didn’t appear once in comparable weeks the past three earnings periods. Such concerted moves — up and down — are further complicating the lives of stock pickers in a year when they’ve had little luck, with only 37% of large-cap active managers outperforming their benchmarks as of the end of September, data compiled by Bank of America Corp. show. “Macro is dominating the narrative again,” Quincy Krosby, chief global strategist at LPL Financial, said by phone. “The situation in the Middle East obviously weighs on sentiment.”
