Philip Morris to sell Vectura for $198 mln after health shift criticism
Philip Morris International's Vectura Fertin Pharma said on Tuesday it would sell its asthma inhaler maker Vectura Group to Molex Asia Holdings for 150 million pounds ($198 million). Marlboro maker PMI bought Vectura in September 2021 as part of a plan to transform itself into a «broader healthcare and wellness» group, a shift it says has been hampered by critics. PMI acquired Vectura, part of its health and wellness unit, in a deal worth 1.1 billion pounds. It has since taken a $680 million impairment against the unit and abandoned plans to raise $1 billion in net revenues from the division by 2025.

Nipah virus outbreak in Kerala: 175 people exposed, says Health Minister as she leads efforts to curb spread
health minister has reported that 175 individuals in Malappuram district have been identified in connection with the recent Nipah virus outbreak. Among these, 74 are healthcare workers. Of the 175 individuals, 126 are on the primary contact list, with 104 considered high-risk, while 49 are secondary contacts. Authorities are treating ten people at Manjeri Medical College Hospital. Testing is underway for 13 individuals, with results pending. This follows the death of a 24-year-old man from Nipah virus on September 9. Previous outbreaks since 2018 have already affected the state, with the first death of 2024 recorded on July 21. Bats in Kozhikode, Wayanad, Idukki, Malappuram, and Ernakulam districts have been found carrying Nipah virus antibodies. Fruit bats naturally host the virus, which can then spread to humans, leading to person-to-person transmission.

26-year-old techie’s dilemma: Canadian citizenship or Rs 41 LPA hybrid job in India?
The software engineer currently earns 85,000 Canadian dollars (around Rs 52.5 lakh annually, including bonuses). However, the high cost of living in Halifax, where he lives, along with Canada’s strained healthcare system, is making life challenging. “Rent’s crazy, paying 2,300 Canadian dollars (Rs 1.42 lakh) for rent and utilities,” he noted, adding that long waiting times for non-urgent healthcare have been another significant issue. His company has offered him a managerial position in Bengaluru with a salary of Rs 36 lakh per annum, plus a Rs 5 lakh bonus. While the offer seems promising, the engineer is concerned about adjusting to the work culture in India, particularly with an Indian manager. “I’ve never worked in India, and I’ve heard horror stories about the demands of Indian bosses,” he mentioned in his post. He’s also unsure about the working environment, which he fears might change if his current managers leave.

Protesting doctors reject Mamata's invite for talks to resolve impasse over RG Kar hospital issue
Mamata Banerjee's invitation for talks at the state secretariat to resolve the impasse over the RG Kar hospital issue. «Your small delegation (maximum 10 persons) may visit 'Nabanna' now to meet government representatives,» the email sent by the state's Health Secretary N S Nigam to the protesting medics on Tuesday evening had stated. «The language of the communication is not only disrespectful to us doctors, it's downright insensitive. We find no reason to reply to this mail,» Dr Debasish Halder, a leader of the protesting doctors who organised a sit-in before the state health department headquarters at 'Swasthya Bhavan' in Salt Lake, said. The doctors conveyed that although «doors remain open» for talks with the state's highest authorities, they would continue with their agitation till their demands are met.
