India’s generative AI startups look beyond ChatGPT-like models
₹1—no physical doctor’s time can be this affordable," Pratyush Kumar, cofounder of Sarvam and adjunct faculty at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras, told Mint last month. “Instead of taking clientele away from doctors, in India, such domain-specific AI models can make healthcare more accessible to a wide population base." The approach Sarvam, Adya.ai and some of their peers are taking marks a sobering change after an initial AI euphoria to create general purpose generative AI models.

Delhi Medical Association seeks to be made party in SC's suo motu RG Kar case
Delhi Medical Association on Monday moved the Supreme Court, seeking to be made a party in a suo motu case related to the rape and murder of a postgraduate medic at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The national capital-based doctors' body with more than 15,000 members has sought setting up of a committee headed by a former Supreme Court judge to «prepare a module/scheme for protection of doctors and medical service personnel against any violence in the hospitals and the public healthcare centres». A bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandraachud is scheduled to hear as the first matter on Tuesday a suo motu case related to the rape and murder of the postgraduate medic in Kolkata amid the ongoing nationwide doctors' strike over it. The Delhi Medical Association's (DMA) plea, settled by senior lawyer Vijay Hansaria and advocate Sneha Kalita, has urged the top court that the committee could «comprise of the representatives of the Indian Medical Association; National Medical Commission; secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, government of India; an officer not below the rank of inspector general of police; resident doctors or representatives of the doctors from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital; members of civil society and such other person as this Hon'ble Court may deem fit and appropriate».

Narayana Murthy, Infosys co-founder says India didn't pay attention to this issue post-Emergency; Here's what he said
Narayana Murthy, co-founder of Infosys, highlighted the issue of India's rising population as a major challenge during the convocation ceremony at Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology in Prayagraj on Sunday. He stressed that inadequate attention to population control since the Emergency period threatens the country's sustainability. «India faces significant challenges related to population, per capita land availability, and healthcare facilities,» Murthy stated. He elaborated by comparing India with other nations, saying, «Since the Emergency period, we Indians have not paid enough attention to population control. This poses a risk of making our country unsustainable. In comparison, countries such as the US, Brazil and China have far higher per capita land availability.»

Kolkata doctor rape-murder case: Padma awardee doctors urge PM for Healthcare Worker Protection Law
Padma awardee doctors have urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to quickly enact a special law addressing violence against healthcare professionals following the Kolkata rape-murder incident. They recommended an immediate ordinance to enforce «the harshest possible punishment» for those who engage in physical or verbal violence against healthcare workers. These demands come in the wake of the alleged rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, coupled with accusations of a botched investigation and cover-up. Healthcare professionals and organizations, including the Indian Medical Association (IMA), have launched widespread protests advocating for a central law to ensure medic safety. Notable signatories of the letter include Dr. Balram Bhargava, former Director General of ICMR, Dr. Randeep Guleria, former AIIMS Delhi Director, and Dr. S K Sarin, Director of the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences. In the letter, the doctors have expressed their significant concern and called for PM Modi's immediate intervention. The letter emphasizes the brutal nature of the event and the urgent need to address violence, especially against women, girls, and healthcare professionals.

Kolkata murder-rape case: What is the Central Protection Act, a key demand of unions, doctors and protesters?
A survey conducted by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) puts a number to the alarming extent of stress and fear among doctors. According to the survey, 82.7% of doctors experience significant stress in their profession, 62.8% fear violence and 46.3% identify violence as a major source of their stress. These figures illustrate the growing concern regarding the safety and well-being of medical professionals, reported ToI. «The present Bill not only merely focuses on punishment but also addresses the other parameters which lead to violence. It will ensure that all the healthcare service personnel have the right to work in a safe and secure work place which is free of violence and also secure the rights of patients,» said the official document.

Q1 earnings wrap: Green shoots, red lines
Mint takes a look at the key sectoral themes that emerged from the Q1 show: The overall earnings growth was driven by domestic cyclicals—firms that alternate between periods of high and low profit—such as automobiles and banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI), underpinned by robust demand and credit growth. There were improved contributions from healthcare, real estate and capital goods. Conversely, earnings growth was weighed down by global cyclicals such as oil and gas, where firms suffered an up to 90% plunge in profits, along with metals, cement and specialty chemicals.

Focus on large deals, AI crucial for Sonata amid short term hiccups
Sonata Software, a mid-tier IT company, has lost 18% in August so far after the company’s subdued June quarter performance due to delay in large deals. While it is likely to face challenges in the current quarter as well, Sonata expects to post better numbers in the second half of the current fiscal year given a strong order book. Given the slower momentum in the first half of the year, analysts have reduced the estimated earnings growth rate for the full year.
