Israeli military says it uncovers Hamas command centre, weapons at Gaza hospital
Israeli troops found an operational command centre and assets belonging to Palestinian Hamas militants in Gaza’s biggest hospital, Israel’s military said on Wednesday, during a campaign that has stoked global alarm over the fate of civilians inside.Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City has become the main target of the incursion into the territory by Israeli forces, who say the “beating heart” of the Hamas fighters’ operations is headquartered in tunnels beneath it, something Hamas denies.Israeli military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said the troops, who entered the hospital earlier on Wednesday after encircling it for days, had found weapons, combat gear and technological equipment there and were continuing their search. The military also released a video they said showed some of the materials recovered from an undisclosed building in the hospital compound, including automatic weapons, grenades, ammunition and flak jackets.Israel has consistently maintained that the hospital sits above a Hamas headquarters, an assertion the United States said on Tuesday was supported by its own intelligence.Hailing the entry of his forces into the hospital, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement: “There is no place in Gaza that we cannot reach. There are no hideouts.

'Horrendous events' in Gaza in past days 'beggar belief': UN rights chief
Gaza in recent days is unfathomable, the UN rights chief said Sunday, with attacks on schools harbouring displaced people and a hospital turned into a «death zone». «The horrendous events of the past 48 hours in Gaza beggar belief,» United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk said in a statement. He spoke as the World Health Organization scrambled to evacuate the last remaining patients and staff from the Al-Shifa hospital, with UN officials describing the Palestinian territory's largest health facility, raided last week by Israeli troops, as a «death zone». Elsewhere in northern Gaza, a Hamas health official said more than 80 people were killed on Saturday in twin strikes on Jabalia refugee camp, including on a UN school sheltering displaced people. «The killing of so many people at schools turned shelters, hundreds fleeing for their lives from Al-Shifa Hospital, amid continuing displacement of hundreds of thousands in southern Gaza, are actions which fly in the face of the basic protections civilians must be afforded under international law,» Turk said. He described the images purportedly taken in the aftermath of the reported Israeli strike on the UN-run Al-Fakhura school as «horrifying», and «clearly showing large numbers of women, children and men severely wounded or killed». — 'May constitute war crimes' - The UN rights chief pointed out that in Khan Younis in southern Gaza, the Israeli military «are dropping leaflets demanding residents go to unspecified „recognised shelters“, even as strikes take place across Gaza». «Irrespective of warnings, Israel is obliged to protect civilians wherever they are», he said, pointing to the principles under international law of distinction,

Hamas battles Israeli forces in north Gaza, amid hopes of hostage deal
Hamas gunmen battled Israeli forces trying to push into Gaza's largest refugee camp on Sunday and at least 11 people were killed by an Israeli air strike on a house, medics said, as hopes rose of a deal to free some hostages from the enclave. The Washington Post said on Sunday that U.S. mediators were close to a deal between Israel and Hamas to free dozens of women and children held hostage in Gaza in exchange for a five-day pause in their war that would help boost emergency aid shipments to Gaza civilians, citing people familiar with the matter. The Post had reported on Saturday that a tentative deal had been reached, but this was denied by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S.

32 babies in critical condition are among the patients left at Gaza's main hospital, UN team says
The team was able to tour Shifa Hospital for an hour after about 2,500 displaced people, mobile patients and medical staff left the sprawling compound Saturday morning, said the World Health Organization, which led the mission. «Patients and health staff with whom they spoke were terrified for their safety and health, and pleaded for evacuation,» the agency said, describing Shifa as a death zone. It said more teams will attempt to reach Shifa in coming days to try to evacuate the patients to southern Gaza, where hospitals are also overwhelmed.

Israel set to widen Hamas offensive after air strikes kill dozens
Israel prepared on Sunday to expand its offensive against Hamas militants to southern Gaza after air strikes killed dozens of Palestinians, including civilians reported to be sheltering at two schools. After earlier in the week dropping leaflets, Israel on Saturday again warned civilians in parts of southern Gaza to relocate as it girds for an onslaught in that part of the small coastal enclave, after subduing the north. Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini of UNRWA, the U.N. aid organization for Palestinian refugees, said on social media platform X that Israel bombarded two agency schools in the north.

WHO says Gaza's Al-Shifa hospital a 'death zone', urges full evacuation
World Health Organization said Sunday it had led an assessment mission to Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City and determined it was a «death zone», urging a full evacuation. "WHO and partners are urgently developing plans for the immediate evacuation of the remaining patients, staff and their families," the United Nations health agency said in a statement, adding that 291 patients and 25 health workers remained inside the hospital. WHO said it had headed a joint UN team, including public health experts, logistics officers and security staff from a range of agencies on a short and «very high-risk» mission into the hospital on Saturday. The assessment team had gone into Al-Shifa after the Israeli military had earlier ordered the evacuation of some 2,500 displaced people sheltering on the hospital grounds, WHO said. «They, along with a number of mobile patients and hospital staff, had already vacated the facility by the time of the team's arrival,» the statement said. Columns of sick and injured — some of them amputees — were seen making their way out of Al-Shifa hospital Saturday towards the seafront without ambulances along with displaced people, doctors and nurses, as loud explosions were heard around the complex. The UN assessment team was meanwhile only able to spend an hour inside the hospital due to the security situation. The team, WHO said, described the hospital as a «death zone» and the situation as «desperate». — 'Mass grave' - «Signs of shelling and gunfire were evident.

Gaza communications blackout ends, giving rise to hope for the resumption of critical aid deliveries
Gaza Strip on Saturday, ending a telecommunications blackout that forced the United Nations to shut down critical humanitarian aid deliveries because it was unable to coordinate its convoys. Meantime, an Israeli airstrike hit a residential building on the outskirts of the town of Khan Younis, killing at least 26 Palestinians, according to a doctor at the hospital where the bodies were taken. Early in the war, the Israeli military told civilians to flee northern Gaza, the target of its ground offensive, but also kept up its bombardment in the southern evacuation zone where Khan Younis is located. Israel has signalled plans to expand its offensive south while continuing operations in the north, including Gaza City, where troops were still searching the territory's biggest hospital, Shifa, for traces of a Hamas command centre that Israel alleges was located under the building — a claim Hamas and the hospital staff deny. In Khan Younis, the attack early Saturday hit Hamad City, a middle-class housing development built in recent years with funding from Qatar. In addition to the 26 people killed, another 20 were wounded, said Dr.
