Money market funds best for interim
Money market funds have emerged as an alternative for individuals parking their funds for a short duration, typically three to six months. These funds are attracting conservative investors seeking better yields without significant risk as they provide a combination of safety, liquidity, and relatively stable returns. Also, given the recent volatility in the markets, some long-term investors are viewing money market funds as an interim solution.

A $3bn bet on finding the fountain of youth
the prolongation of life is a field that seems particularly attractive to the man (and it usually is a man) who otherwise has everything. The founders of Altos do, though, seem deadly serious about what they are up to. Looking at discoveries in biology made over the past few decades—two of these, in particular—they believe they have glimpsed the outline of an answer to the question of how to reverse the process of cellular ageing.

Hindalco’s shine relies on aluminium prices
Hindalco Industries Ltd were not immune, rising by 4% and also touching a new 52-week high. Prior to this, the stock was up 3% in 2023 so far. But to keep investor sentiment intact, a significant uptick in demand for aluminium is necessary, which in turn would lift the metal’s prices.

Cantaloupes recalled in several US states over likely salmonella contamination. Check side effects, disease
cantaloupes sold in multiple U.S. states during the week of October due to concerns about potential salmonella contamination. Consumers uncertain about their cantaloupe purchases during this period are advised to contact their retailer. As of now, there have been no reported illnesses linked to the recalled cantaloupes. The company is responsible for distributing cantaloupes, which are under scanner, directly to 10 states and Canada through various retailers, and there is a possibility that the fruits reached stores in additional states, as per the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Sold between October 16 and October 23, the cantaloupes were packaged in cardboard containers bearing the «Malichita» label. Additionally, the fruits feature stickers with individual price look-up (PLU) codes. The upper portion of the sticker is white with «Malichita» in black, while the lower half is black with the number 4050 in white, accompanied by the words «Product of Mexico/produit du Mexique.» Salmonella, the cause for concern, can result in severe and potentially fatal infections in vulnerable populations, including young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. The FDA notes that healthy individuals may experience symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, salmonella infections can lead to more serious conditions like arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis. Consumers in possession of the recalled cantaloupes are strongly advised to dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase for a refund, according to the FDA. Those who suspect they have fallen ill due to the consumption of the recalled product should seek medical attention promptly.

7 years' jail 'high' for offence of causing death by negligence, says parl panel
Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs, headed by BJP MP Brijlal, also observed that the 10-year jail suggested in the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for those who cause death of a person by rash or negligent act and escape from the scene of the incident or fail to report the incident to police or a magistrate, needed to further be deliberated for whether the clause should be retained at all. «The committee feels that the punishment provided under clause 104(1) is high as compared to the provision for the same offence under section 304A of IPC.

Canada Foreign Minister calls strain in bilateral ties "difficult moment," says in close contact with EAM Jaishankar
Canada, Melanie Joly, has said that she is in close contact with her Indian counterpart, S Jaishankar, adding that it is a difficult moment in relationship between the two nations that has spanned decades. Melanie Joly held a virtual news conference on Thursday to discuss her participation in the recent G7 foreign ministers' meeting, which took place in Tokyo. During the conference, Joly discussed Canada's diplomatic standoff with India, especially at a time when relations between the two countries remain strained. She said, «When it comes to India, I have mentioned it many times...I am in close contact with my counterpart, S Jaishankar, and we know this is a difficult moment in a relationship that spanned decades, so therefore I am confident that we will be able to get through this difficult period, as we know that we have many interests also that we can work together in common.» Highlighting the issue of 41 Canadian diplomats withdrawn from India, she stated that Canadian diplomats had to leave India because their immunities were taken back. «Of course we talk about our relationship within the Indo-Pacific with all our friends and like-minded...and of course...we are preoccupied by Induia's decision to get rid of the diplomatic immunities of 41 of our Canadian diplomats which put their safety at risk,» she said. «And, we are happy to see that there is clear language in the declaration (G7 declaration) reaffirming the importance of the Vienna Convention and the diplomatic immunities that are part of this,» she added. On being asked by the reporters if the dispute is settled now, the Canadian Foreign Minister added by saying, «Well, first and foremost, I have said it many times that Canadian diplomats had to leave

Global captives buck the trend, likely to hire 30% more this year
Global Capability Centres (GCC) are bucking the broader industry’s hiring downtrend. This year, GCC hiring could climb up to 30% from last year, with four out of five facilities adding jobs, data accessed by ET showed. Fresher hiring by GCCs will mainly benefit premier institutes, experts said. This comes as the top Mumbai-listed IT services companies, otherwise among the leading absorbers of fresh engineering and management talent, have decided to skip the campuses.

Marico expects revenue growth to come back in the second half of the fiscal and sluggish rural demand to gradually improve, said its Managing Director and CEO Saugata Gupta. It has taken price corrections after softening of inflation in the domestic market in the last two quarters, which has some effects on its revenue growth.
