Sanjay Roy on Friday refused to give his consent for a narco analysis test, leading the court to reject the CBI's request to conduct the procedure in the R G Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder case. The CBI had approached the Sealdah court, seeking permission for the test after arresting Roy in connection with the alleged crime. The agency planned to use the narco test to verify Roy’s statements. “The test would help determine if Roy is telling the truth,” the officer stated. During the procedure, sodium pentothal is administered to induce a hypnotic state, neutralising the subject’s imagination, the officer explained, adding that this method often leads to the accused providing accurate information. A hearing on the CBI’s appeal was expected later in the afternoon. The agency had already conducted a polygraph test on Roy inside Presidency Correctional Home, as part of the investigation.

Department of Pension and Pensioners' Welfare (DoPPW) DLC campaign 3.0, which will run from November 1 to 30, 2024, across all district headquarters and major cities in India. On September 12, 2024, a preparatory meeting was conducted to plan the DLC campaign 3.0 for district post offices. The meeting was chaired by V Srinivas, Secretary of DoPPW, and included Sanjay Sharan, Director General of Postal Services, Rajul Bhatt, Deputy Director General of Posts, and R Viswesvaran, MD & CEO of India Post Payments Bank (IPPB), among other officials. IT hardware manufacturers are urging the government to significantly reduce the five-to-six-month certification process for locally-made laptops and notebooks, which they say is hindering production ramp-up under the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for IT hardware. Industry executives have informed the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) about the extended timelines for acquiring BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) certification. This is due to the mandatory separate tests for battery packs installed on laptops, after running viability tests for making the products with local contract manufacturers. “Currently, because of the requirements of acquiring testing certificates for individual components like the battery pack as well as the laptop as a whole, the whole process takes around 5-6 months, where the products themselves have a shelf life of 8-10 months,” a senior executive at a leading IT hardware brand told ET on condition of anonymity.

PM E-DRIVE Scheme to be rolled out soon, Union Heavy Industries Minister HD Kumaraswamy said on Thursday. Addressing a media briefing, Kumaraswamy said the subsidy under the PM E-DRIVE Scheme for electric two-wheelers has been fixed based on battery power at Rs 5,000 per kilowatt hour but the overall incentive will not exceed Rs 10,000 in the first year. In the second year, it will be halved by Rs 2,500 per kilowatt hour, and the overall benefit will not exceed Rs 5,000. Addressing the media, Kumaraswamy said e-rickshaw buyers can avail of subsidy benefits of Rs 25,000 in the first year and Rs 12,500 in the second year of the PM E-DRIVE scheme.

When asked on whether the deal will go through by the end of this fiscal, the source, who is not authorised to speak to the media, said the deal itself is in a quandary. Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Puja Khedkar's response on a plea by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) seeking initiation of perjury proceedings against her for allegedly giving false statement and affidavit in the court. Justice Jyoti Singh issued notice to Khedkar on the UPSC's application and granted her three weeks to file reply to it. The court listed the matter for further hearing on November 26. The UPSC contended that the July 31 communication by which Khedkar's candidature was cancelled was communicated to her on her registered email id the same day. It said it was the same email id, which was registered in her online application for the Civil Service Program (CSP) 2022.

Madurai on Thursday, authorities reported. According to Madurai District Collector M S Sangeetha, the explosion caused smoke and a fire, leading to the deaths of two women, identified as Parimala and Saranya. The injured victims are currently receiving treatment at a hospital. The incident took place early in the morning while the residents were asleep, and the two women were pronounced dead upon arrival at a government hospital. Information Technology Minister P Thiaga Rajan expressed his condolences over the deaths and assured that all necessary assistance, including alternative accommodation, is being provided to the affected hostel residents. During his visit, the minister interacted with the displaced inmates and checked on the injured women receiving treatment at a private hospital. Madurai District Collector M S Sangeetha confirmed that an inquiry is underway regarding claims that the hostel was unlicensed and that the building was old. She acknowledged that civic authorities had reportedly issued a demolition notice to the owner last year. Documents are currently being verified, and the hostel owner is under questioning. Authorities have been instructed to inspect hostels throughout the district to ensure safety standards are met.

Army officers and their female friends were attacked by a group of men who gang-raped one of the women at gunpoint near the historic Jam Gate. Commenting on the incident, Additional SP Rupesh Dwivedi said on Wednesday night that six suspects had been identified, two of whom have been detained from the jungles. Both Army officers were injured in the mob attack. One of them managed to dial his senior officers but by the time police arrived from Mhow, 30km away, the woman had already been gang-raped. The two Armymen are undergoing the Young Officers course at Infantry School, Mhow, SP Rural Hitika Vasal said. According to the complaint filed by one of the lieutenants, the four of them had driven to Ahilya Gate near Jam Gate on Mhow-Mandleshwar road on Tuesday night.
