Thanks to AI, Business Technology Is Finally Having Its Moment
Menlo Park, Calif.—The generative AI boom reflects a period of tech innovation that is ideally suited for revolutionizing the business world—unlike previous tech booms that favored the creation of big tech companies that served the consumer market. The period of innovation that took off around 2007 made use of social media and app stores to help startups achieve scale in the consumer market, according to Hemant Taneja, managing director and CEO of venture-capital firm General Catalyst, speaking Tuesday at the Wall Street Journal’s CIO Network Summit in Menlo Park, Calif. This time it is different, Taneja said.

Silicon Valley Needs to Accept That Insurance Is Boring
Silicon Valley entrepreneurs hate it when the audience gets bored, but they may need to elicit more yawns if they are to transform insurance. Enthusiasm for artificial intelligence continues to power the stock market, but it isn’t giving a second wind to companies committed to revolutionizing insurance through technology, or “insurtech." Shares in listed players such as Lemonade, Root and Hippo have been trading sideways. Meanwhile, global insurtech funding fell to $4.5 billion in 2023, a 44% decrease from the previous year, according to fresh data by reinsurance broker Gallagher Re.

IEA will gain from India's increased involvement: PM Modi
Narendra Modi on Wednesday said India brings talent and innovation to the table and the International Energy Agency (IEA) will benefit if the world's fastest growing major economy plays a bigger role in the Paris-based organisation. In a recorded message for the ministerial meeting of the IEA, he said India has surpassed its Paris climate targets ahead of schedule and remains firmly committed to addressing the global issue. Prime Minister Modi said India's carbon emissions account for only four per cent of the global total despite it being home to 17 per cent of the global population and undertaking some of the world's largest energy access initiatives. Congratulating the IEA on its 50th anniversary, the prime minister said, «I am sure that the IEA will benefit when India plays a bigger role in it.»

We need to focus more on the social effects of AI, says Nicholas Christakis
just-published experiments led by Hirokazu Shirado at Carnegie Mellon University, we found that even very simple forms of AI assistance for drivers, such as auto-steering or auto-braking, eroded social norms of reciprocity on the road. Allowing humans to delegate whether to swerve away from an oncoming car in repeated games of chicken resulted in people subsequently being less likely to take turns in giving way, thereby increasing the frequency of crashes when they drove without AI assistance. These effects of AI suggest that it could have a big impact on the social norms that have evolved over millennia, shaping how we treat each other in all manner of everyday interactions.
