The fear and tension that led to Sam Altman's ouster at OpenAI
Sam Altman led OpenAI to the adult table of the technology industry. Thanks to its hugely popular ChatGPT chatbot, the San Francisco startup was at the center of an artificial intelligence boom, and Altman, OpenAI's CEO, had become one of the most recognizable people in tech. But that success raised tensions inside the company. Ilya Sutskever, a respected AI researcher who co-founded OpenAI with Altman and nine other people, was increasingly worried that OpenAI's technology could be dangerous and that Altman was not paying enough attention to that risk, according to three people familiar with his thinking. Sutskever, a member of the company's board of directors, also objected to what he saw as his diminished role in the company, according to two of the people.

WHO says Gaza's Al-Shifa hospital a 'death zone', urges full evacuation
World Health Organization said Sunday it had led an assessment mission to Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City and determined it was a «death zone», urging a full evacuation. "WHO and partners are urgently developing plans for the immediate evacuation of the remaining patients, staff and their families," the United Nations health agency said in a statement, adding that 291 patients and 25 health workers remained inside the hospital. WHO said it had headed a joint UN team, including public health experts, logistics officers and security staff from a range of agencies on a short and «very high-risk» mission into the hospital on Saturday. The assessment team had gone into Al-Shifa after the Israeli military had earlier ordered the evacuation of some 2,500 displaced people sheltering on the hospital grounds, WHO said. «They, along with a number of mobile patients and hospital staff, had already vacated the facility by the time of the team's arrival,» the statement said. Columns of sick and injured — some of them amputees — were seen making their way out of Al-Shifa hospital Saturday towards the seafront without ambulances along with displaced people, doctors and nurses, as loud explosions were heard around the complex. The UN assessment team was meanwhile only able to spend an hour inside the hospital due to the security situation. The team, WHO said, described the hospital as a «death zone» and the situation as «desperate». — 'Mass grave' - «Signs of shelling and gunfire were evident.

The founders of Altos do, though, seem deadly serious about what they are up to. Looking at discoveries in biology made over the past few decades—two of these, in particular—they believe they have glimpsed the outline of an answer to the question of how to reverse the process of cellular ageing.

Bonobo apes are great at forming alliances for sharing limited resources & teaming up against interlopers: Study
And according to a study published Thursday in the journalScience, we're not alone: bonobos team up with outsiders too, in everything from grooming to food sharing, even forming alliances against sexual aggressors. Lead author Liran Samuni of the German Primate Center in Gottingen told AFP that studying the primates offered a «window into our past,» possibly signaling an evolutionary basis for how our own species began wider-scale collaborative endeavors. Bonobos (Pan paniscus) are our closest living relatives, alongside chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), and the two species are also very closely related to each other. But while encounters between chimpanzee groups are inherently hostile and often result in lethal violence, interactions between bonobo parties hadn't been as well examined. That's because bonobos, an endangered species, are notoriously difficult to study in their natural habitat — and they live only in remote regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. With research on chimps dominating the literature, some scientists assumed hostility against outsiders was innate to human nature — something we had perhaps trained ourselves to get past by inventing new social norms, even as that trait lurked deep inside.
