Meanwhile, the RG Kar premises turned into warzone as a major scuffle broke out between senior students and members of the students wing of political parties and police. They were seen beating each other as they protested in front of the hospital. One accused, a civic volunteer (contract bound police official), was arrested and remanded to 14-day police custody. A woman Post Graduate medical trainee doctor, who was sleeping in a seminar room of the hospital after continuous 36 hours duty, was allegedly raped and murdered early morning on Friday.

A fair, transparent and time sensitive criminal investigation is in order. An ultimatum of two days is given to arrest culprits otherwise IMA will take nation wide protests.»

SC to hear plea of students against Bombay HC verdict upholding ban on hijab, burqa in college
Supreme Court on Thursday said it has listed for hearing on August 9 a plea challenging the verdict of the Bombay High Court which had upheld a decision of a Mumbai college to impose a ban on wearing of 'hijab', 'burqa' and 'naqab' inside the campus. A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra took note of the submissions of a lawyer that the term exam is commencing from today and the students, belonging from a minority community, are bound to face difficulties due the instructions on dress code. Lawyer Abiha Zaidi, appearing for petitioners, including Zainab Abdul Qayyum, sought urgent hearing saying the unit tests in the college are commencing. «It is coming up tomorrow (Friday). I have listed it already,» the CJI said.

Wayanad landslides: Tribal communities safe, say officials
Kerala government on Monday said the families of the tribal communities of Wayanad, which was recently hit by devastating landslides on July 30, were safe and were staying in relief camps arranged by the SC/ST department. Currently, 47 tribal community members, including children, are in various relief camps under the state government. All the tribal families in the region have survived the landslides that hit Mundakkai and Chooralmala regions of Wayanad, officials said. «The four families from Erattukund hamlet will be rehabilitated. In West Bengal, the number of households that completed 100 days of wage employment was «zero» in 2023-24, according to the written reply given by Union Minister of State for Rural Development Kamlesh Paswan in the Upper House of Parliament.
