T20 World Cup: India, Australia, Afghanistan, Bangladesh semi-final chances explained after Aussies lose to Afg
Afghanistan pulled off a monumental 21-run upset over Australia in the T20 World Cup, with Gulbadin Naib’s four-wicket haul overshadowing Pat Cummins’ hat-trick. Afghanistan defended their total of 148 for six, securing their first-ever win over Australia in international cricket. Australia were bowled out for 127 in 19.2 overs in the Super Eight contest, now facing potential early elimination from the World Cup. They must win against India and hope Afghanistan loses to Bangladesh. Afghanistan avenged their ODI World Cup defeat in Mumbai, where Maxwell had previously snatched victory from them. Skipper Rashid Khan expressed immense pride in the team's performance, highlighting Naib’s impactful bowling and Nabi’s early dismissal of Warner. The result has thrown Group 1 wide open, with both Australia and Afghanistan having one win each, while India leads with two wins. The final Super Eight matches will be crucial in determining which teams advance to the semi-finals, with all four teams in Group 1 still having a chance to make it through.

These documents, a few of which are being reprinted for our readers, reveal a series of letters exchanged between the British Olympic Association, the International Olympic Committee and the India Office, discussing the prospects of Indian participation at the 1912 Olympics. Had this participation happened, India would have been among the first Asian countries to embrace the Olympic movement, alongside Japan, which established a national Olympic Committee in 1911 before participating in the 1912 competition.

Soccer: Finally, a euros for a whole continent
Edi Rama’s best friend during the World Cup summer of 1982 just so happened to be the one person he knew who owned a color television. So every evening, Rama would find himself crammed into his kitchen with countless others, desperately hoping that the fuzzy, flickering signal would hold. Albania was an island back then, under the repressive, conspiracist rule of Enver Hoxha. Foreign travel was banned for all but a select few insiders. Even communication with the outside world, particularly the West, was limited. Rama and his friends could only follow that World Cup through what he has subsequently called a “dark network” operated by RAI, the Italian state broadcaster. In a recent interview with Italy’s Tuttosport, he said that he still remembers that month warmly. Italy served as Albania’s avatar for the tournament; the two countries, in Rama’s estimation, are “a people divided by the sea, but united in everything else, similar as two drops of water.” When Dino Zoff, the Italian captain, eventually lifted the trophy in Madrid, it felt like victory in Tirana, too. “We saw it in his hands, as if it were also in ours,” Rama said.

CEO succession planning is important. But how you go about it makes all the difference
Succession planning is crucial for strategic business management and remains a top priority for boards, alongside fundraising and maintaining balance sheet health, says Ishwa Consulting “Our research indicates that companies with robust succession plans outperform their peers by 20% in revenue growth and shareholder returns. However, promoter-driven companies continue to lag behind. In 2024, 27% of promoter-driven companies have formal CEO succession plans, up from just 9% a decade ago,” it adds.

Green Cards for Grads: Trump’s new vote magnet?
Trump. The former president, known for his unpredictable policies, has proposed granting Green Cards to foreign graduates. The announcement has caught the attention of many, especially within the international student community. Currently, many international students face uncertainty about their ability to remain in the US after completing their studies. A guaranteed Green Card would eliminate this worry, providing a clear path to permanent residency and potentially boosting the number of international students applying to US universities. Promises to ease immigration restrictions for students and skilled workers are not new. Over the years, various US administrations have made similar commitments, often with mixed results. For instance, the Obama administration introduced the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which provided temporary relief to young immigrants. However, it faced numerous legal challenges and its future remains uncertain. During his 2016 campaign, Trump promised to end the H-1B visa program, claiming it was being abused by companies to hire cheap foreign labour at the expense of American workers. This promise was popular among certain voter bases but caused significant concern among tech companies and international students who rely on these visas to work in the US after graduation. Despite his tough stance, the H-1B program remains largely unchanged, highlighting the complexities and political manoeuvring involved in immigration reform.

Income tax saving: Sold land, house or jewellery? Know how indexation benefit can help you lower your long-term capital gains
inflation has reduced the purchasing power of Rs 100 over the years. So why should you pay income tax on long-term capital gains without factoring in inflation? Rather than inflationary gain, it is fair to pay income tax only on real gain. This is why the Income Tax law allows you to take advantage of indexation. It helps you to get a discount for inflation over the current price of the asset and get the inflation-adjusted present value of your capital gains. «Indexation is a mechanism which is used to adjust the current price of a capital asset to reflect the effect of inflation on it in comparison to the date of its actual purchase. With the help of indexation, one can lower the Long-Term Capital Gain (LTCG) and corresponding tax applicable on it at the time of sale of such capital asset,» says Daizy Chawla, Managing Partner, S&A Law Offices. So, you must use indexation to your advantage and pay a lower long-term capital gains tax. However, do note that this benefit is not available for every capital asset.
