How Ranjani Srinivasan, an Indian origin Columbia student, fled to Canada after immigration agents came looking for her
Three federal immigration agents showed up at a Columbia University apartment searching for Ranjani Srinivasan, who had recently learned her student visa had been revoked. Srinivasan, an international student from India, did not open the door. She was not home when the agents showed up again the next night, just hours before a former Columbia student living in campus housing, Mahmoud Khalil, was detained, roiling the university. Srinivasan packed a few belongings, left her cat behind with a friend and jumped on a flight to Canada at LaGuardia Airport.

Indian shapewear brands clamour to tighten your waist and cinch you, inch by inch
The success stories of Spanx and Skims have made shapewear quite hip—and it’s true for India, too. A Google search for “shapewear in India” results in hundreds of options, including shapewear specialists like Dermawear, startups like ButtChique and The Active Story that started in 2020 and 2023, respectively, intimatewear labels like Nykd by Nykaa Fashion, older brands like Zivame and Clovia, international brands like Marks & Spencer and smaller brands in online marketplaces. There are tummy tuckers, sari shapewear, bodysuits, shaping dresses, 4-in-1 shapers for the stomach, hips, back and thighs, and colours that go beyond the beige, with prices starting from `250 to `7,000. So, is everyone wearing shapewear? Not as many as should, says Abhishek K Kumar, CEO of Dermawear. “In comparison to the global usage of such products, we have only scratched the surface. India still has a long way to go to adapt shapewear in daily life, which underscores the opportunity the market presents.” He that is not keen on loose petticoats and pinching drawstrings. It entered the shapewear segment with high-compression garments targeting occasion wear; that is close to 10% of its portfolio now. She says, “Today, shapewear has moved from thicker fabrics to high-compression thin fabrics. It is also being looked at beyond occasion wear.” She says people now want outerwear with shaping function, like a knit top that shapes the abdomen.

Canada eases PGWP rules, removes field-of-study requirement for college graduates
Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). That requirement had been put in place in 2024 for Canadian colleges but not universities, and it was part of an effort by the Canadian government to apply heavier scrutiny to the international education sector, as per an ICEF Monitor report. “Graduates of college degree programs will no longer be required to meet the PGWP field of study requirement,” said Canadian Bureau for International Education CEO Larissa Bezo. No timeline set for ministerial panel on reservation rules in Jammu and Kashmir: Government
cabinet sub-committee, which was formed last year to look into grievances against the present reservation policy in the Union Territory. The information was given by Sakeena Itoo, the minister in-charge social welfare, in a written reply to a starred question by Peoples Conference legislator Sajad Gani Lone in the House. The cabinet sub-committee headed by Itoo with ministers Satish Sharma and Javed Rana as its members was constituted in December last year and is going to submit its report to the council of ministers headed by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Reservation has become a major issue in Jammu and Kashmir following the Central government's decision to add more communities to the reserved category and expand quotas in the UT over the past five years. There are increasing objections to the Centre's move to push the reservation quota to 70 per cent in Jammu and Kashmir. «The Cabinet Sub Committee stands constituted vide Government order No. 2061- JKGAD of 2024, dated 10.12. 2024 to examine the grievances projected by a section of aspirants for various posts regarding reservation rules. However, no specific timeline has been fixed for submitting the report,» the minister said in response to Lone, who had asked whether a six months time period had been granted to the panel to review the existing reservation policy. Itoo said that a total of 5,39,306 Scheduled Tribe population — 4,59,493 in Jammu division and 79,813 in Kashmir division — have obtained ST certificates in the last two years effective from April 2023, while 67,112 certificates have been issued to scheduled caste population of Jammu region during the same period.

India slams Pakistan for 'unjustified' reference to Jammu and Kashmir in UNGA
India has slammed Pakistan for its «unjustified» reference to Jammu and Kashmir in the UN General Assembly, with New Delhi asserting that such remarks will neither validate the country's claim nor justify its practice of cross-border terrorism. «As is their habit, the former foreign secretary of Pakistan today has made an unjustified reference to the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir,» India's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador P Harish, said in remarks on Friday in the General Assembly at the informal meeting of the plenary to commemorate the International Day to combat Islamophobia.

Two NASA astronauts, one Japanese, and one Russian: Meet NASA's new crew to ISS to bring back Sunita Williams and Butch Willmore
Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, who have been stuck on the orbital lab for nine months. NASA’s SpaceX Crew-10 mission lifted off at 7:03 p.m. EDT on Friday from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, carrying four astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS). The Crew-10 team will spend approximately six months aboard the station. The crew members include NASA astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers, Japanese astronaut Takuya Onishi, and Russian cosmonaut Kirill Peskov. As their mission mascot, the astronauts selected a crocheted origami crane—a symbol of unity. Highlighting the crew's international diversity, McClain expressed their shared vision: «Crew-10 chooses to go together in peace because you cannot be great without the greatness of others,» she said.

NASA's stuck astronauts, Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams, set to return as new crew launches to ISS
NASA astronauts stranded in space launched to the International Space Station on Friday evening, setting the stage for their colleagues' return after nine months. SpaceX must deliver this replacement team before Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams can depart. The new crew is expected to arrive late Saturday night. To ensure proper handover of space station operations, NASA requires an overlap period between the crews. This arrangement would enable Wilmore and Williams to depart next week and land off Florida's coast, subject to weather conditions. Astronauts who arrived on a SpaceX rescue mission in September will accompany the pair back to Earth, using two seats previously allocated for their return journey. The fresh crew, launching from NASA's Kennedy Space Center, comprises NASA astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers (both military pilots), alongside Japanese astronaut Takuya Onishi and Russian cosmonaut Kirill Peskov (both former airline pilots). They will undertake a standard six-month mission after facilitating Wilmore and Williams' departure.

Russia 'committed crimes against humanity' in Ukraine: UN probe
The crimes were perpetrated as part of a systematic, widespread attack against civilians, the UN's Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Ukraine said in a new report to be formally presented next week. «The commission has concluded that Russian authorities committed enforced disappearances and torture as crimes against humanity,» the report said. «Both were perpetrated as part of a widespread and systematic attack against the civilian population and pursuant to a coordinated state policy,» it added. The curious case of Pakistan Airlines: Flight lands without a wheel; officials probe whether it was stolen
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight landed at Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport with a missing rear wheel, an airline official confirmed on Friday. Fortunately, no accidents or incidents were reported following the Thursday morning landing. The domestic flight, PK-306, had departed from Karachi for Lahore when it was discovered upon landing that one of its rear wheels was missing. A PIA official told PTI that an investigation has been initiated to determine whether the aircraft took off from Karachi with the missing wheel or if it detached during takeoff. Some wheel fragments were later found at Karachi airport, suggesting possible damage before departure. “It appears that one of the rear wheels was in poor condition when the aircraft took off,” the official noted. Despite the missing wheel, a PIA spokesperson reassured that PK-306 made a “smooth and uneventful landing” as scheduled, with passengers disembarking normally.

NASA, SpaceX try again to launch rocket set to bring back stuck astronauts
NASA and SpaceX on Friday will count down to a long-awaited crewed rocket launch that will allow them to bring home U.S. astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, who have been stuck on the International Space Station for nine months. SpaceX and the U.S. space agency had planned on Wednesday to launch from Florida a replacement crew of four astronauts, a mission called Crew-10, but a last-minute issue with the rocket's ground systems forced a delay. Now slated for liftoff at 7:03 p.m. ET Friday (2330GMT), the Crew-10's arrival to the ISS on Saturday night will allow the return of Wilmore and Williams, two veteran NASA astronauts and U.S. Navy test pilots who in June 2024 were the first humans to test-fly Boeing's Starliner spacecraft to the ISS in June. But problems with Starliner's propulsion system during its flight to the ISS delayed what was expected to be an eight-day stay. NASA deemed it too risky for the astronauts to fly home on the Boeing craft, which led to the current plan to bring them home in a SpaceX capsule. It has also become entangled in politics as President Donald Trump and his adviser Elon Musk, SpaceX's CEO, claim without evidence President Joe Biden left «Butch and Suni» on the station for political reasons.

Iran weaponises tech to crush dissent, UN probe reveals
state-sponsored vigilantism" to crush dissent after the «Women, Life, Freedom» protests in 2022, a UN investigation said Friday. Iran is making «concerted state efforts to stifle dissent, perpetuating a climate of fear and systematic impunity», the United Nations' Independent International Fact-Finding Mission said in a new report. These involve «the increased use of technology and surveillance, including through state-sponsored vigilantism». Iran was rocked by demonstrations after the September 2022 death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old who had been arrested for allegedly violating the strict dress rule for women based on Islamic sharia law. Widespread anger led to weeks of taboo-breaking protests against the Islamic republic's system of government under supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Shubhanshu Shukla, are set to conduct pioneering research aboard the International Space Station (ISS) as part of Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4) later this year. Among their experiments is a groundbreaking study that could enable insulin-dependent diabetics to travel to space in the future. Bryan Mitchell, Ax-4 mission manager, shared exclusive details about this research, known as ‘Suite Ride’, and other scientific studies that the crew will undertake. Speaking to TOI from Axiom Space headquarters in Houston, Texas, Mitchell explained the significance of these projects.
