Why this state-run lender is hunting for lower-rated corporate borrowers
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. Mumbai: State-owned Bank of India is looking to go beyond its comfort zone of lending to companies with the highest credit ratings to shore up its margins, which is already under pressure and could sink further following the Reserve Bank’s rate cut. Chief executive Rajneesh Karnatak said in an interview withMint that the bank is looking for companies rated ‘BBB’ or ‘A’ to lend to, as those rated ‘AA’ or above have more bargaining power on lending rates.

Arizona Supreme Court taps AI avatars to make the judicial system more publicly accessible
AI-generated avatars to deliver news of every ruling issued by the justices, marking what is believed to be the first example in the U.S. of a state court system tapping artificial intelligence to build more human-like characters to connect with the public. A court in Florida uses an animated chatbot to help visitors navigate its website, but the Arizona Supreme Court is charting new territory with the creation of Victoria and Daniel. Made of pixels, the two avatars have a different job in that they serve as the face of news coming from the court just as a spokesperson made of flesh and blood would do — but faster. The use of AI has touched nearly every profession and discipline, growing exponentially in recent years and showing infinite potential when it comes to things as simple as internet searches or as complex as brain surgery. For officials with the Arizona Supreme Court, their venture into AI is rooted in a desire to promote trust and confidence in the judicial system.

Anushka Sharma pens powerful post on perception after Virat Kohli calls out BCCI for its diktat against family time
Anushka Sharma recently took to Instagram to share a thought-provoking message about the way different people perceive us. She reflected on how the image we hold of ourselves is not necessarily the same as the way others see us. She pointed out that our family members, colleagues, and acquaintances all form their own distinct impressions of us, and in essence, multiple versions of our identity exist in the minds of those who interact with us. On her Instagram post, Anushka Sharma shared a quote that read, “A different version of you exists in the minds of everyone who knows you. The person you think of as ‘yourself’ only exists for you, and even you don’t really know who that is. Every person you meet, have a relationship with, or make eye contact on the street with, creates a version of ‘you’ in their heads." She elaborated further, writing, «You’re not the same person to your mom, your dad, your siblings than you are to your co-workers, your neighbors or your friends. There are a thousand different versions of yourself out there, in people’s minds. A ‘you’ exists in each version and yet your ‘you’, ‘yourself’ isn’t really a ‘someone’ at all.»

Israel consulted US on its strikes in Gaza, White House told Fox News
«The Trump administration and the White House were consulted by the Israelis on their attacks in Gaza tonight,» White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a Fox News interview. Palestinian medics in Gaza reported dozens of people were killed in the aftermath of a series of the most violent air attacks by Israel on the Palestinian enclave since a ceasefire was reached on January 19 between Israel and Hamas militants. A senior Hamas official said Israel had unilaterally overturned the ceasefire agreement. «As President Trump has made it clear — Hamas, the Houthis, Iran, all those who seek to terrorize not just Israel, but also the United States of America, will see a price to pay. All hell will break loose,» the White House spokesperson said.

Travel warning for Green Card, H-1B, F-1 visa holders: Don't leave the country unless absolutely needed
Kripa Upadhyay, a Seattle-based immigration attorney, told TOI's Lubna Kably, “As heartless as this may seem, foreign nationals (especially those needing renewal of H-1B or F-1 visa stamps) really need to think twice about leaving the US right now.” The US Department of State recently changed eligibility requirements for interview waiver or «dropbox» appointments. Earlier, anyone who had been issued a non-immigrant visa (except B visitor visas) could apply for a waiver if their visa expired within 48 months. Now, dropbox is limited only to applicants renewing the same category of visa that expired within the last 12 months.

Jyoti Basu rejecting PM post not factor; support loss in WB, Tripura caused CPI(M) decline: Karat
«It is a fact that the party's independent strength and influence have not grown… And that's primarily been due to the erosion in our base of support in West Bengal and Tripura, two of the strong states that we have,» Karat said in an interview with PTI. «So, the focus of our forthcoming party congress is how we strengthen the party,» the CPI(M) interim coordinator added. The CPI(M) had 43 MPs in the 14th Lok Sabha from 2004 to 2009. Its tally declined to 16 in 2009, nine in 2014 and three in 2019. The party won four seats in the Lok Sabha in the 2024 elections. In state assemblies, the CPI(M)-led Left Front was defeated by the TMC in West Bengal in 2011 after being in power for 34 years. It was defeated by the BJP in Tripura — which the CPI(M)-led coalition had governed since 1993 — in 2018.

Housing demand strong, prices to grow this year at more than inflation rate: CREDAI Prez Boman Irani
Housing demand continues to be strong and is expected to grow further on the back of tax incentives offered in the Budget and a recent repo rate cut, CREDAI President Boman Irani said. CREDAI is an apex body for private real estate developers. In an interview with PTI, Irani asserted that there are no signs of demand slowdown in the Indian housing market, rather it will continue to rise in the long-term horizon. However, he said there could be an impact in some markets that are «over-heated» but overall at pan-India level there are no concerns at all on the growth going up only. Short-term blips in a real estate cycle is not something that we need to worry about. We need to see long-term growth," he told PTI in Nashik, where CREDAI recently organised its two-day conference.

Uber in early discussions with EV ride-hailing startup BluSmart for a possible acquisition
Uber Technologies is in early stages of discussions to acquire BluSmart Mobility, the Gurugram-based all-electric cab service operator, two people in the know said. A deal could help Uber increase its presence in the growing space for electric cabs in India as well as signal consolidation in the urban mobility industry. The discussions come at a time when Gensol Engineering, the solar engineering procurement and construction company promoted by BluSmart cofounder Anmol Singh Jaggi, is facing liquidity issues. “Uber is scoping out BluSmart’s assets...particularly the electric vehicle fleet, which could help shore up its presence in the segment,” one of the people said.

CPI(M) aiming to recover Bengal base, unite 'Left and democratic forces' against TMC, BJP: Karat
Left and democratic forces" against both the TMC and the BJP, party leader Prakash Karat has said. He added that no discussions had been held on whether the Left Front and the Congress would contest the assembly polls, due in 2026, in an alliance. In an interview with PTI, the CPI(M) interim coordinator stressed that the party losing ground in West Bengal was a major reason behind its declining electoral strength. The CPI(M) is focusing on working among the rural poor to regain its traditional support base, Karat said. Asked about the party's standing in West Bengal, which the CPI(M)-led Left Front governed for 34 years between 1977 and 2011 before losing to the TMC, the veteran leader highlighted the recent mobilisations of youngsters, including during the protests against the RG Kar rape and murder incident. «I am not talking only about our party but all Left and progressive forces (that) came out in large numbers, mobilising the youth also in a big way,» Karat told PTI.

DeepSeek founder, who shook US tech giants' supremacy, prefers humanities graduates over techies
DeepSeek, a leading AI company, is taking an unconventional approach to hiring under the leadership of CEO Liang Wenfeng. Unlike many tech companies that prioritize candidates with extensive technical expertise, Liang focuses on creativity, intellectual curiosity, and diverse perspectives. His strategy places an emphasis on hiring Generation Z, avid readers, and humanities graduates, believing that imaginative thinking is more valuable than years of experience. During a 2023 interview with Chinese media outlet 36Kr, Liang explained his approach. “When aiming for rapid results, it makes sense to hire those who already possess the necessary expertise,” he said. “However, for long-term ambitions, experience holds less significance. Core competencies, an inventive mindset, and an unwavering passion for the work are attributes I value above all else.” His perspective challenges the industry norm, where companies like OpenAI and Meta favor candidates with strong technical backgrounds. Liang, however, sees open-mindedness and a willingness to explore unconventional solutions as more critical for addressing complex AI challenges.
