The IPO frenzy isn’t a sign of a robust stock market
Recently, a two-wheeler dealership with a few dozen employees was in the news for an initial public offer (IPO) that attracted 400 times the money it sought to raise. This subscription rush highlighted the casino-like appeal of IPOs that seems to have taken retail investors in its thrall. Now, a study by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) suggests that Indian investors have a large number of gamblers in their midst.

Is the market showing signs of fatigue? Deven Choksey answers
«Till now as well the larger focus is on the insurance space and whenever the opportunity is available in the insurance companies, definitely the buying is emerging into them,» says Deven Choksey, MD, DRChoksey FinServ Pvt. Ltd. What is it that you are feeling about the market? Is it showing any signs of a fatigue? I mean, when you look at some of the individual high HNI concentrated names and the kind of fall that they have had from their previous peak, some of them are down even 30 odd percent or so. What is the feeling that you are getting about the market right now? Deven Choksey: Overall, I think the market direction is very-very clear. Anything which is available at a comfortable discounted valuation, as I call it as, the market is not waiting for latching onto that kind of an opportunity. So, obviously, the important aspect here would be to buy on dips, that is very-very clear and obvious. Now, where the actions are being centred at this point of time, our understanding is that the majority of the interest continues to remain in the BFSI space.

Oasis has driven up ticket prices, the British government has promised to look into the pricing system. But dynamic pricing — which alters prices based on demand — increases efficiency of markets and has come to be used in all manner of things, from airline fares to concert tickets. SME market like a casino? Sebi should talk it down & regulate only in case of fraud: Sunil Subramaniam
Sunil Subramaniam, Market Expert, says that speculation is part of a healthy capital market. It is only when you have these speculative entities like these people come in, that there is liquidity in the market. But if you regulate them and take them out, overall as a market, the liquidity is going to shrink. Should the regulator step in on the valuations? Subramaniam thinks that is right because there is no golden rule on what should be the right valuation. The market is the best determinant. So, unless there is clear evidence of fraud, some price fixing, rigging, or some false news put across which makes the share price go up, Sebi shouldn’t put in any regulation. The SME market is almost like a casino now. It does not feel like a stock market. Sunil Subramaniam: I fully agree with you. The reason for this is also related to the rampant futures and options situation. Demat accounts are going up. Post-COVID, youth with a lot of time on their hands, armed with internet and technology hands, are treating the stock market like a gambling den. There are no two ways about it. We do not have other options for gambling. We can see similar kinds of success when it comes to Dream11 and those kinds of sports-related apps. Despite all Sebi restrictions, financial influencers (fin fluencers) play a big part. It is like a get-rich-quick scheme. Booking gains from these IPOs show their intent. They are not investors. They are speculators.

Time to be cautious for near time; moving from small & midcaps to largecaps for steadier growth: Mahesh Nandurkar
«We are moving some part of the money from smallcap, midcaps into the largecaps, turning a bit more defensive from a near-term perspective. I personally believe that the economic growth driven by investment cycle is very much on a strong footing,» says Mahesh Nandurkar, Jefferies. What is your view on the market and what exactly are you communicating to your clients after the Union Budget and ahead of US elections? Mahesh Nandurkar: So, what we have been communicating to investors and what has been our strategy is that over the last couple of months we have toned down the risk or the beta factor in our portfolios.
