India Meteorological Department forecast, the heat wave conditions across east India are expected to gradually abate from May 1st as schools break for their summer vacation. But the southern regions of the Indian Peninsula are expected to experience heat wave conditions for the next five days. In specific areas like Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, and Bihar, heat wave conditions persisted over the last few days, with isolated severe heat wave pockets, according to IMD. Additionally, isolated pockets in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Rayalaseema, Konkan, interior Karnataka, and Kerala experienced heat wave conditions. Odisha has been facing these conditions since April 15th, while Gangetic West Bengal has been affected since April 17th. On Sunday, maximum temperatures soared to 42-45°C in parts of Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, and Rayalaseema. In East Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Marathwada, Madhya Maharashtra, North Interior Karnataka, and Telangana, temperatures ranged from 40-42°C. Certain areas in Vidarbha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, and isolated pockets of Chhattisgarh and Gujarat also experienced high temperatures. These temperatures were 4-8°C above normal in many parts of Bihar and Gangetic West Bengal, as well as in some parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and isolated pockets of north Odisha.

Soma Sen Roy, senior scientist said that severe heatwave conditions have been prevailing in Gangetic West Bengal for many days and hence a red alert has been issued. “Severe heatwave conditions are also being faced in Odisha, especially in North Odisha, although not like in West Bengal but severe enough for many days and hence a red alert has been issued for this part too," she said as quoted by news agency ANI.

North India are less likely to happen amidst an increase in thunderstorm activities. Speaking with ANI, Soma Sen Roy said, «Yesterday (April 26), we observed thunderstorm activities, especially in North-West India… There have been quite strong winds blowing. In states like Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan, we witnessed hailstorm activities.» The scientist explained that due to these thunderstorm activities, the chances of heatwave conditions are less likely to happen. «Due to these thunderstorm activities, there is a drop in temperature and there can be a decrease of 4 degrees to 5 degree Celsius and therefore, the chances of heatwave conditions in North India are less likely to happen,» she said

Weather update today: IMD issues red alert for heatwave in THESE states The News Himachal reported that rainfall will occur in several districts of Himachal Pradesh till April 30. The weather monitoring agency also predicted hailstorms in Shimla, Solan, Kullu, Sirmaur, Chamba, Kangra, Bilaspur, and Mandi districts in the coming days.
