ETMarkets Smart Talk: Banks, cement, Infra among 7 themes that could lead next leg of rally: Jiten Parmar
“Banking, cement, infra, paper, sugar, power and chemicals (as a contra bet) are some of the sectors where we still see reasonable valuations in some pockets,” says Jiten Parmar, Co-Founder, of Aurum Capital. In an interview with ETMarkets, Parmar said: “Many pockets look expensive. One has to look at individual stocks, for example, many stocks from defense, and railways do not have a margin of safety and are looking stretched,” Edited excerpts: Nifty hit 20200 levels and then we saw some bit of healthy profit-taking amid muted global cues. What is your take on markets for the medium to long term? For the medium term and long-term, I remain constructive on the markets. Indian economy is doing fairly well.

Staggered investment in gilt funds may help beat inflation
mutual funds such as gilt schemes which bet on long-term government securities. Fund managers believe the Reserve Bank of India's move to leave the repo rate unchanged at 6.5% with a focus of bringing inflation down presents an opportunity to long-term fixed-income investors. Investments in such funds with a two- to three-year view would help earn about 200 basis points above inflation, they believe. «The 10-year benchmark yield above 7% presents a good opportunity for long-term fixed-income investors to stagger their investments into long-tenure funds over the next four-six months» said Sandeep Bagla, chief executive at Trust Capital. Such a strategy would help investors beat inflation and also earn a capital appreciation when interest rates fall, according to him. Fund managers believe the near-term rates are likely to be volatile and could move a bit higher given the RBI indication of open market operations to manage liquidity. This move has already pushed up the 10-year benchmark by 13 basis points to 7.38%. In the last quarter, the 10-year benchmark bond yield had risen just 20 bps. A note by Franklin Templeton Mutual Fund says with the likelihood of core inflation staying sticky and likely moderation in growth, the easing rate cycle could only start in the fourth-quarter of calendar 2024, in the form of shallow cuts.

Why BHP is against ‘sugar hit’ subsidies for critical minerals
BHP chief executive Mike Henry says an unprecedented era of government funding for “critical minerals” ventures risks distorting markets, and governments could achieve a broader benefit by speeding up project approvals rather than giving “sugar hits” to individual projects.

State-run lenders to work on climate risk metrics
climate risk assessment metrics as part of a broader strategic roadmap outlined by the government to maintain their growth and profitability momentum. The finance ministry is likely to hold a review, later this month, on performance of public sector lenders in the backdrop of a three-year strategic roadmap, a government official told ET. The move is in line with increased focus globally on the challenges posed by climate change and the need for building financial sector resilience and readying state-owned lenders for the next leap. «Globally, there is a shift towards incentivising companies with low carbon footprints,» another official aware of the development said. «PSBs (public sector banks) also need to factor in environmental, socioeconomic, and governance (ESG) issues while doing credit assessment and include climate risk as a part of risk assessment policy,» the person added. The country's largest bank, State Bank of India (SBI) has already started identifying climate risks that have the potential to generate substantive change in the business. Operational Synergies The three-year strategic roadmap (FY24-FY26) for PSBs also focuses on bringing greater synergy in operations.

Antarctic sea ice sets new record. Check its impact on global weather, climate
To put this into perspective, the 'missing' sea ice measures approximately 386,000 square miles less than the previous record low recorded in 2022, which is larger than the land area of Egypt. As the southern hemisphere transitions into spring, the US National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) said in a statement that Antarctic sea ice had only reached a maximum size of 16.96 million square kilometers (6.55 million square miles) this year, on September 10. The ice pack typically reaches its largest size during the colder winter months, so the September 10 reading will likely remain this year's maximum. «This is the lowest sea ice maximum in the 1979 to 2023 sea ice record by a wide margin,» said the NSIDC, a government-supported program at the University of Colorado at Boulder. At its high-point this year, the sea ice was 1.03 million square kilometers smaller than the previous record, roughly the size of Texas and California combined. The vast glacial ice sheet of Antarctica and the ice covering the surrounding seas play a vital role in climate regulation. They act as a reflective surface, bouncing the sun's energy back into the atmosphere and space. In contrast, the dark surface of the ocean absorbs a significant portion of the sun's incoming energy. Therefore, a reduction in sea ice leads to higher temperatures, creating a self-reinforcing cycle that accelerates global warming.

Have you really come a long way, ladies? Or still being (stereo)typical?
Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Eighth Amendment) Bill, 2023, which was passed in Parliament last month, seeks to reserve one-third of the total number of seats in Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies for women. But what about the presence and role of women in other sectors, such as advertising and marketing services? While this industry employs many women, their number in key leadership positions are still relatively low. It was only in 2017 that the Advertising Agencies Association of India (AAAI) awarded its Lifetime Achievement Award for the first time to a woman, Roda Mehta. What about women in ads? Are there too few? Too many? And how are they presented? In his 1976 book, Gender Advertisements, sociologist Erving Goffman conducted an analysis of women in US advertising.

Nifty poised for gains; DLF, Titan, and Eclerx Services emerge as top bets: Rajesh Palviya
“Though Nifty is almost trading near to the 19650 level, the broader market and the participation from most of the large-cap stocks are clearly indicating that sentiment is now turning towards the bullish side,” says Rajesh Palviya of Axis Securities. Edited excerpts: ET Now: Firstly, let me come to you and talk about the levels for Nifty as well as Bank Nifty. After a good recovery on Thursday and Friday trading sessions, do you believe that as we progress in the earning season, we are set to build on to these gains? Rajesh Palviya: So we have seen the beginning of this October series was on a negative note. The short rollover was there, and the follow-up selling was there in the first phase of the first days of this October series. We almost tested a low of around 19300-19350 zone and from there, we've seen a smart recovery in the market ahead of this earning season. Then post the RBI policy, we observed that the broader market has recovered, and most of the large-cap and mid-cap stocks have also shown good buying interest.
