50% of 8 billion vaccine doses worldwide manufactured in India: Union health secretary
vaccine doses manufactured and distributed across the world in the last one year alone, half of them were manufactured in India, said Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava. She said this while addressing the annual India Leadership Summit 2024, organised by the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum here today. Punya said India has emerged as a global leader in pharmaceuticals, being the third-largest producer and a key supplier of generic medicines. This sector's success has resulted in substantial savings for healthcare systems worldwide, including a notable contribution to the US healthcare system.

Govt may mandate QR codes to check fake cancer drugs
cancer drugs, a bid to prevent counterfeits and validate the authenticity of medicines after incidents of refilling of expensive anti-cancer drugs with counterfeit drugs came to light. The proposal was discussed in a recent meeting of the Drugs Technical Advisory Board (DTAB), India's highest advisory body on drugs, which deliberated on the matter and agreed to it, said people familiar with the matter. The implementation of the proposal will, however, require an amendment to Schedule H2 of Drugs Rules, 1945, and therefore will be sent to the health ministry soon, they said. The board was informed that criminals in collusion with hospital pharmacies were found refilling empty vials of expensive anti-cancer medicines with counterfeit drugs. These fake drugs were then mixed with genuine stocks and sold to unsuspecting cancer patients, putting their life at risk.

Dangerous social media trend among youth - chroming; what it is and what you need to know
chroming. Specialists elucidate this pattern. The new huffing for the younger generation is called chroming. Per Dr. Anthony Pizon, an emergency medicine professor and chief of the medical toxicology division at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, the dangerous practice is a means of getting high via inhaling hydrocarbons through the misuse of a variety of legal products, including permanent markers, aerosol deodorant, nail polish, metallic paint, computer duster, carburetor cleaner, paint thinners, gasoline, and hair spray. According to Pizon, the name originates from the remnant of chrome or metallic paint that is left on one's face after breathing in metallic paints applied to a cloth. According to Dr. Betty Choi, a pediatrician and author of ‘Human Body Learning Lab: Take An Inside Tour of How Your Anatomy Works,’ common types of chroming entail breathing via the nose or mouth straight from the container or from a cloth or plastic bag soaked with the desired substance.

Why you need to ditch BMI for better ways to assess your health
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. There used to be a time when upon joining a gym, the first thing trainers would make you do would be to stand on a BMI (body mass index) machine, enter your height and weight, and wait while it whirred and spat out a receipt with your number. While BMI is basically a value derived from the mass (weight) and height of a person, the machine would also give data on visceral fat, real age and other determinants that could either be impressive or scary or both.
