Sheikh Hasina, the daughter of Bangladesh's founding leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, has been in power consistently since 2009: a period that also marked the country’s economic transformation and political stability. However, Bangladesh’s economic turnaround met with mass political unrest as Hasina’s governance began appearing dictatorial and elections were seen internationally as a mere formality.

Bangla-dashed: Sheikh Hasina resigns, flees to India; protesters storm residence; military in charge
Sheikh Hasina fled Bangladesh for India on Monday seemingly just ahead of protesters storming their way into the Prime Minister's residence in Dhaka as month-long protests led by students over job quotas boiled over into an uprising. As many as 300 people have been killed since the protest began in July. A plane carrying Hasina, 76, landed at the Hindon Indian Air Force base just outside the capital as New Delhi worked out a safe passage for its long-standing ally in the region. Her final destination isn't clear. While some reports said she may go into exile in London, there is a possibility that she might depart for a destination in eastern or southern Europe. Belarus may be one of the possible destinations. Back in Dhaka, the country's army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman said on state television that, with Sheikh Hasina having resigned, the military would form a caretaker government, following meetings with political parties.

Proposed amendments to Wakf Act in line with BJP's politics of polarisation: Tejashwi Yadav
RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav on Monday alleged that the proposed amendments to the Wakf Act were in line with the BJP's politics of «polarisation» along religious lines. The former Bihar deputy chief minister, who is now the Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly, also questioned the Centre's reluctance to place in Constitution's ninth schedule the legislations, struck down by the Patna High Court, by which quotas for deprived castes had been hiked in the state. «The Union government seems to have no interest in working for the poor. This is a reflection on the ruling BJP at the Centre, which believes in the politics ofte polarisation,» Yadav told reporters. He was responding to queries about proposed amendments to the Wakf Act, which have met with stiff opposition from parties like Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi's AIMIM, and drawn flak from constituents of the INDIA bloc.

Reliance Capital case: Administrator accuses IIHL of not complying with NCLT order
debt-ridden Reliance Capital (RCAP) has filed an affidavit with NCLT, accusing IIHL of non-compliance as the Hinduja Group firm failed to meet the conditions set by the tribunal in a July 23 order. The administrator, in its affidavit seen by PTI, informed NCLT that instead of depositing Rs 2,750 crore in the designated escrow accounts of the Committee of Creditors (CoC) in India and abroad, IndusInd International Holdings Ltd (IIHL) has deposited the money in its own accounts as well as the promoters' accounts. However, IIHL in a separate affidavit had said it has funds and the same will be transferred once the escrow account is in place which has conditions listed out. For opening any escrow account, there are terms and conditions which are based on an agreement signed bilaterally and if the terms and conditions are met or not met, the trustee decides the fate of funds accordingly, an IIHL spokesperson said.

Jairam Ramesh submits privilege motion notice against Amit Shah over remarks in RS on Wayanad landslides
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Friday submitted a notice to move a privilege motion against Union Home Minister Amit Shah, alleging that he «misled» the Rajya Sabha by his emphatic statements on early warnings issued by the Centre to the Kerala government ahead of the Wayanad landslides «which have been proven to be false». Ramesh, who is the Congress' chief whip in the Rajya Sabha, said in his letter to Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar that in his response to a Calling Attention on the Wayanad landslides in the Rajya Sabha on July 31, 2024, the home minister made several claims on early warning systems and how they were not utilized by the Kerala government inspite of alerts issued by the Union government well ahead of the tragedy. «These claims have been extensively fact-checked in the media. One such detailed fact-check published in The Hindu dated August 2, 2024 is attached,» Ramesh said in his letter, which was also signed by Congress' deputy leader in the House Pramod Tiwari and senior leader Digvijaya Singh.

Tempted to book profits? Here are three types of stocks you should never sell.
While evaluating Dixon Technologies recently, I realised that even the slightest slowdown in growth could deliver a huge blow to the stock’s valuation. A price-to-earnings ratio of 200 means that if you were to buy 100% of the company's shares, it would take 200 years for you to earn back your initial investment through its profits. Dixon is not the only Indian stock that’s soaked in excess liquidity in recent months.

Delhi breached WHO set annual air quality limit in Jan
Sunil Dahiya, a South Asia analyst at CREA, said, “This ongoing issue highlights the need for stronger regulations and a focus on reducing emissions. Using better technology and data can help control pollution.” He added, “India’s standards are more lenient than WHO’s, which can lead to long-term exposure to harmful particles. Research shows that even short-term exposure to PM2.5 in India poses significant health risks, suggesting that air quality standards need to be updated to better align with international guidelines to prevent diseases.”
