Vinesh Phogat on Wednesday was disqualified from Paris Olympics' 50 Kg wrestling category for being overwieght by 100 grams.
A statement released by the Indian Olympic contingent revealed that 29-year-old Phogat's disqualification was triggered by a slight uptick in the body weight.
«It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the Women's Wrestling 50 kg class. Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50 kg this morning. No further comments will be made by the contingent at this time. The Indian team requests you respect Vinesh's privacy. It would like to focus on the competitions on hand,» the Indian Olympics contingent said.
This disqualification, however, is not the first setback for Phogat since she began her international wrestling career.
The then 21-year-old Vinesh Phogat's performance in the 2016 Rio Olympics was cut short by a rather tragic twist of fate. When she met China's Sun Yanan in the mat, Yanan was seen pinning Phogat down. The position made Phogat visibly shudder with pain, and the wrestler sustained a knee injury.
Phogat had to be carried on a stretcher from the mat, with tears clouding her vision. It was a round of 16 exit at the Olympics for Phogat back then. She made her comeback to the international mat in 2018.
