Modi govt may finally realise Rs 29,000 cr from divestment of this bank following RBI green signal
IDBI Bank ahead of the Union Budget 2024 and all eyes are now on Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The Narendra Modi government had set the ball rolling for divesting its stake in the development financial institution-turned bank in May 2021. Since then, the Centre has been waiting for the green signal from the RBI as the central bank assessed if the bidders met the fit and proper norms. These norms check if the bidders are compliant with regulations and are not under the scanner of other regulators. The central bank has given its report on all but one bidder which happens to be a foreign participant, which did not share information and the overseas regulator too has not provided data, TOI on Thursday reported. With the current market cap nearing Rs 95,000 crore, the Centre could potentially realize around Rs 29,000 crore from the disinvestment. However, several observers have noted that the transaction terms are not very attractive.

Indian, Chinese companies' JV proposals may get quicker nods
Union home secretary, the person said. Proposals under Press Note 3 will be expedited only when certain conditions are met. First, the Indian company has to make a case that the technology required and investment proposed is critical for developing the local manufacturing supply chain in areas such as hi-tech components. Second, the management and board of the investee company should not have any Chinese nationals in key roles such as MD/CEO and finance chief, and the Chinese partner can only have a minority stake in any partnership. These conditions will apply to Chinese joint ventures with Indian entities and even with foreign firms operating in India, according to four industry executives. The government plans underscore acknowledgment in industry circles that current Press Note 3 approvals are taking much longer time even where the Chinese has a minority, non-controlling and non-strategic stake, impacting investor sentiments, decisions and investment flows into India. The ministry of commerce and industry, through which Press Note 3 applications are processed, didn't respond to ET's queries.

Karnataka Reservation: Mohandas Pai calls it discriminatory & regressive, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw says 'we need skilled talent'
Karnataka have voiced objections against the Karnataka reservation proposals, calling the move «discriminatory» and expressing concerns about potential repercussions for the tech industry. In a significant move, the Karnataka cabinet has greenlit the draft State Employment of Local Candidates in Industries Factories and Other Establishments Bill, drawing swift and sharp criticism from notable figures. The bill, aimed at prioritizing local employment, has raised concerns about its potential impact on investment and the tech sector in the state. Prominent voices like Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw and TV Mohandas Pai have openly criticized the state government's decision. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Executive Chairperson of Biocon Ltd, voiced her concerns, stating, «As a tech hub, we need skilled talent. While the intention is to boost local employment, we must ensure it doesn't jeopardize Karnataka's leadership in technology. There should be provisions exempting highly skilled roles from this policy.» TV Mohandas Pai, former CFO of Infosys, condemned the bill, labeling it as «discriminatory» and «regressive.» He asserted, «This bill must be scrapped. It's akin to fascism. How can the government dictate private sector hiring practices? This move is reminiscent of Orwell's Animal Farm. It's unbelievable that @INCIndia supports such a bill.»

Chandrababu Naidu again seeks financial package for Andhra Pradesh ahead of Budget
Union budget presentation on July 23, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is on a two-day visit to Delhi to push for the demands raised by him for his state with central ministers. Naidu, a key ally in the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, met Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday evening. He is slated to meet other Union ministers on Wednesday. At his meeting with Shah, Naidu raised the issue of his state's fiscal condition. Naidu apprised Shah that he will be releasing a white paper on this on Thursday — his government's fourth since assuming power last month. Naidu took to microblogging site X and said, «Today in New Delhi, I met with the Hon'ble Union Home Minister, Shri @AmitShah Ji, to apprise him of the devastating condition of finances that Andhra Pradesh had slipped into over the past five years. I also discussed the findings of the four White Papers released, outlining the staggering debt accumulated between FY 2019-24 that spiralled our State's finances out of control. Economic incompetence, gross mismanagement, and rampant corruption by the previous government have caused irreparable damage to our State.»

Chhagan Bhujbal-Sharad Pawar meet raises eyebrows in Ajit Pawar's camp
Maharashtra minister and senior NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal on Monday met Sharad Pawar, who heads the rival NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar), in what is seen as a sign of continuing churn in state politics and leaders hedging their bets. The meeting, which Bhujbal claimed was to discuss the tensions between OBC and Maratha communities over the latter's demand to be included in the OBC category to gain reservation benefits, has raised eyebrows in the Ajit Pawar camp as sections of leaders in the group believe he is looking to switch sides. «I came to meet him not as an MLA or a minister or even as a party leader. I came to meet him as there is an explosive situation in some districts of Maharashtra as tensions are running high between the Dalit and Maratha communities. People from both communities are boycotting each other's business. I have come to meet Pawar saheb to seek his help in resolving these tensions before this leads to arson and violence,» said Bhujbal.

Overconfidence hurt BJP's hopes in Lok Sabha polls: Adityanath at party meeting
BJP unit after the Lok Sabha poll debacle in the state, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday said "overconfidence" hurt the BJP's hopes in this year's elections. Addressing the BJP's UP working committee meeting here, Adityanath said while the BJP managed managed to maintain its vote share of previous elections, there was a «shifting of votes», and now the «defeated» opposition is «jumping around» again. The chief minister said, «Under the leadership of PM Modi, we had maintained constant pressure on the opposition in UP, achieving great success in 2014, 2017, 2019 and 2022 (national and state elections).» «The percentage of votes that BJP had in its favour in 2014 and subsequent elections, BJP has been successful in getting the same number of votes in 2024 as well, but shifting of votes and overconfidence have hurt our hopes,» he said.
