Rajasthan continues to battle rising temperatures, five deaths due to suspected heat stroke were reported in the state on Thursday. The mercury soared to 48.8 degrees Celsius in Barmer, the highest temperature recorded this summer season, according to Met Centre Jaipur. Five peacocks were also found dead in Khairthal district, officials said. Barmer was followed by Phalodi with maximum temperature at 48.6 degrees degrees, Fatehpur at 47.6 degrees Celsius, Jaisalmer at 47.5 degrees Celsius, Jodhpur at 47.4 degrees Celsius, Jalore at 47.3 degrees Celsius, Kota at 47.2 degrees Celsius and Churu at 47 degrees Celsius, the Met Centre said.

India's peak power demand hit the season's high of 235.06 GW on Wednesday mainly due to excessive use of cooling appliances like air conditioners and coolers amid severe heat waves in most parts of the country. According to the power ministry data, the peak power demand met or the highest supply in the day is recorded at 235.06 GW on Wednesday, which is the maximum so far in the summer season this year. The all-time high peak power demand of 243.27 GW was recorded in September 2023. The record is expected to be broken during this summer season. Earlier this month, the power ministry projected a peak power demand of 235 GW during daytime and 225 GW during evening hours for May and 240 GW during daytime and 235 GW during evening hours for June 2024.

Rajasthan continued to reel under the grip of severe heat conditions with Barmer recording the highest temperature at 48 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. Looking at the situation, the state government cancelled the leaves of all divisional commissioners, additional divisional commissioners, district collectors, additional district collectors and sub divisional officers till further orders. Health authorities had already cancelled the leaves of all doctors and paramedical staff in government hospitals as temperatures soared in the state. The maximum temperature recorded during the day was 48 degrees in Barmer, 47.8 degrees in Phalodi, 47.6 degrees in Fatehpur (Sikar), 47.5 degrees in Churu, 47.2 degrees in Jalore and Jaisalmer, and 47.1 degrees Celsius in Vanasthali (Tonk).

Delhi's maximum temperature on Wednesday reached 43.4 degrees Celsius, three notches above the season's average, and remained in the 'Yellow' alert zone, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). There is a very high likelihood of developing heat-related illnesses and heat stroke in people of all ages, and a significant health concern for vulnerable individuals, such as infants, the elderly, and those with chronic diseases, the weather office said. «Avoid heat exposure and keep cool. Avoid dehydration,» the IMD advised, adding that people should drink sufficient water and use ORS or homemade drinks like lassi, torani (rice water), lemon water and buttermilk to stay hydrated. According to the IMD, the city will be on orange alert on Thursday.

Regional Meteorological Department of Rajasthan, in view of the searing and scalding heatwave has issued a red and orange alert for various districts. After the temperature breached the mark of 46 degrees Celsius, the Regional Meteorological Department has expressed the possibility of daytime temperature crossing the mark of 48 degrees Celsius and above in various parts of Rajasthan. Speaking to ANI, Radhe Shyam Sharma, Director of the Regional Meteorological Center, Jaipur said, «There is no respite from the scorching heat, as temperatures have already crossed the mark of 46 degrees Celsius and now mercury is intended to rise beyond 48 degrees Celsius.»
