Telcos oppose 'service authorisation', see threat of regulatory uncertainty
NEW DELHI/KOLKATA: India’s top telecom operators decried the sector regulator’s suggestion that the government grant service authorisation to companies offering communication services instead of entering into a contractual agreement, warning that such a move would ring in regulatory uncertainty and undermine investor confidence. All three private carriers — Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) — unanimously stated during a consultation process of the regulator that the current practice of contractual arrangement should continue as it provides regulatory certainty and predictability. But the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has not agreed to the demand of telcos.

Banks step up vigil on fraudulent account opening via digital banking channels
digital banking channels. This is a practice usually followed by lenders while opening credit accounts, but is now being replicated for deposit accounts too, according to three people in the know. This comes at a time when banks are trying to weed out mule accounts —accounts which receive funds from illegal sources or through fraudulent transactions — from their systems. Reserve Bank of India governor Shaktikanta Das had at a July 3 meeting urged bank chief executives to step up their fight against such accounts. “Some of the largest banks in the country could be processing around Rs 300-400 crore worth of fraudulent transactions through mule accounts on a monthly basis; for mid-tier banks, the amount could be around Rs 50-100 crore. This is becoming a serious problem for banks as digital payments become more ubiquitous,” a senior banker with a private sector bank said on the condition of anonymity.

Maruti plans 25,000 charging points ahead of its first EV launch
electric vehicle, a midsize SUV called Concept eVX, in January 2025, Maruti Suzuki India plans to set up close to 25,000 EV charging points, multiple people aware of its plans said. In addition to tapping into its 5,100-plus service centres in 2,300 cities, the country's leading carmaker is also in talks with oil marketing companies (OMCs) and energy companies to create a charging ecosystem, which has been one of the biggest deterrents to faster adoption of electric mobility in the country, they said. «They (Maruti) have started surveying their dealer workshops for charging points,» said a person aware of the plans. «The plan is to have at least one dedicated bay and two charge points at its service centres. The company has already started training service mechanics in Bengaluru.»

Google urges tribunal to throw out $9.3 billion UK lawsuit over search 'dominance'
Google parent Alphabet on Wednesday asked a London tribunal to throw out a mass lawsuit that accuses the tech giant of abusing its dominance in the online search market. The lawsuit — valued at up to 7 billion pounds ($9.3 billion) — is the latest case focusing on the business practices of Google, which is currently facing a major antitrust trial in the United States over its online advertising business. It is also one of several multibillion-pound cases to have been filed at Britain's Competition Appeal Tribunal in recent years, including a similar case against Google for allegedly abusing its dominance in the online advertising market.

Manipur receives essential commodities at affordable prices through new KPKB initiative
Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Government of India, has launched a programme to provide essential commodities at affordable prices. The initiative involves extending the Kendriya Police Kalyan Bhandar (KPKB) facilities to the general population of the state. Originally introduced by the MHA in 2006, the KPKB system was designed to supply essential goods at concessional prices to serving and retired personnel of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), Central Police Organizations (CPOs), and state police forces across India. Considering the ongoing turmoil in Manipur, the facility has now been extended to benefit the local population, ensuring that essential goods are available at fair prices, despite the restrictions on travel and supplies caused by the unrest.

PM-WANI rule changes seen to give big boost to Wi-Fi hotspots, create lakhs of micro-entrepreneurs
PM-WANI framework guidelines will encourage more individuals to run Wi-Fi hotspots within their local community, thus creating lakhs of micro-entrepreneurs in India, Broadband India Forum (BIF) said Tuesday. BIF, which represents technology firms like Meta, Google, Amazon, TCS etc, also refuted the arguments given by telcos that PM-WANI was redundant, and it can cause revenue loss. “If India were to establish 50 million PM-WANI hotspots, as targeted, telcos could gain an additional Rs 60,000 crore in revenue annually from bandwidth sales in addition to the benefit they will get by having more broadband users, which they might not reach otherwise,” BIF said in a statement. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has amended the guidelines for the Prime Minister Wi-Fi Access Network Interface (PM-WANI) allowing roaming between public data office aggregator (PDOA), removing the need for a commercial agreement between a telco and PDO, allowing the PDOs or public data office to use the existing access points for public and private use. Also, the PDOs have been permitted to accept mobile data offload from the telcos, thereby helping ease the congestion on the mobile network.

Tata, the 155-year-old conglomerate, is preparing for future demands: N Chandrasekaran
Tata Group is transitioning into green businesses, semiconductor manufacturing, and mobile phone part production to prepare for future demands, said Chairman N Chandrasekaran in an interview with the Financial Times. This move includes Tata Steel's decision to close blast furnaces at its UK unit, resulting in 2,500 job cuts as the company shifts to green steel-making. Chandrasekaran stressed the necessity of these steps, stating, «However painful...these are transitions that need to be done.» Tata Steel has incurred a loss of 5 billion pounds on the UK business since acquiring it in 2007 as part of the Corus Group. Leaning towards sustainable practices, Chandrasekaran has been steering Tata Group towards electric vehicles and renewable energy while managing debt and profitability. He advised the CEOs of various Tata entities to focus on financial fitness, saying, “every company has to be focused on financial fitness… don't worry about growth, fix the fitness. Performance will come."
