Nokia is gearing up for a surge in network demand driven by anticipated advances in the metaverse, Web3, and artificial intelligence (AI) by the year 2030.

Nokia Technologies and Guangdong OPPO Mobile Telecommunications Corp on Tuesday informed the Delhi High Court that they want to withdraw their suits including the patent infringement filed by the former, as they have resolved their disputes and reached a confidential litigation settlement last month. Dismissing the suits as withdrawn, Justice Pratibha M Singh said that the parties would be bound by the terms and conditions of the global settlement. The HC also allowed refund of pro-tem security with interest deposited by Oppo during the proceedings within two weeks. It also directed that the confidential documents furnished by the companies in sealed covers or otherwise shall be returned to them and even ordered deletion of their electronic records in the HC.

telecom equipment maker Nokia said on Thursday it had signed a 5G patent agreement with one of China's leading smartphone makers Honor, but its legal battles with other Chinese companies over patents continue. Nokia, once the world's number one mobile phone maker, holds a significant patent portfolio of some key technologies needed in phone manufacturing and the resulting licensing revenue represented 39% of operating profit in 2022.

Nokia cut its operating margin guidance as market conditions in its mobile networks business remain challenging, with operator spending falling and a normalization in India after a period of rapid 5G deployment. The Finnish telecom equipment maker said Tuesday that it now targets a comparable operating margin target of at least 13% by 2026, from at least 14% previously.

Reliance Jio is working with featurephone makers including Transsion's Itel, Lava and Nokia to make their own versions of affordable JioBharat 4G devices, in a bid to push around 250 million 2G users to go for 4G and beyond, a top company executive said. The telco is also set to announce an enhanced version of its Rs 999-priced 4G phone with support for UPI payments, WhatsApp and live TV streaming. «We wanted to establish the product in the market and in the minds of the consumer, so they could associate with it, relate with it...Today, all brands, whether it's Itel, Lava or Nokia, are in touch with us in terms of how do we make it happen,» Sunil Dutt, president (devices division) at Reliance Jio, told ET. Dutt said a typical 2G user isn't comfortable using a smartphone, finding it expensive and prone to malfunctions. Affordability, he said, is the biggest factor, and Jio's new push into the featurephone market is done in a manner to lower the cost of ownership. The JioBharat phones come with special 4G monthly plans which Dutt said are priced much lower than competition. «This is the most exploited customer and surprisingly our competitors have no sense of regret in exploiting them too.

Nokia's Chief Licensing Officer Arvin Patel said the lawsuits were filed in the United States, Germany, India, the UK, and the European Unified Patent Court. Patel added that the legal action targets Amazon's alleged use of Nokia's technologies in streaming services and devices. Additionally, a separate lawsuit was filed against HP Inc.

Nokia said Tuesday it is suing Amazon in five global jurisdictions, including the United States and India, over patent infringements on video-related technologies. Nokia said it is also suing HP, formerly known as Hewlett-Packard, in a US court, also for using Nokia video technology without its permission.

Nokia said on Tuesday it had sued Amazon over the alleged use of the Finnish company's video-related technologies in the U.S. giant's streaming services and devices. Amazon did not immediately respond to a Reuters' request for comment.

Nokia sees demand for equipment to be substantial in 2024-25, a senior company official said. The proliferation of fixed wireless access network will usher the Indian telecom sector into the second phase of 5G network deployment, Nokia India head of mobile networks business Tarun Chhabra said at the India Mobile Congress. «India's requirement is still going to be substantial in 2024-25, then our factories will be fully loaded with India plus some exports,» Chhabra said. 5G network roll-out in India has been remarkable and the country is among the top three nations with the largest 5G installed base in the world, a top Nokia official said. Nokia President and CEO Pekka Lundmark was addressing an event during the inauguration of the company's 6G research lab in Bengaluru on Thursday. «5G roll-out in India is truly remarkable. This has been one of the fastest telecom network roll-outs ever and means India is now among the top three countries in the world that have the largest 5G installed base, with 5G download speeds beating those found in many advanced markets,» Lundmark said. While there has been a decline in telecom gear shipment across major geographies, the 5G roll-out in India has been able to offset a dip in the business of Ericsson and Nokia. Nokia posted 333 per cent growth in India sales at about Rs 9,500 crore in the June quarter of 2023. Ericsson reported 74 per cent growth in net sales in the June 2023 quarter in «South East Asia, Oceania and India» to around Rs 10,700 crore of which around 90 per cent of its business comes from India. Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel are expected to invest about Rs 75,000 crore in the current financial year to strengthen their networks, according to a report by JM Financial. According to the report, Jio may invest around Rs 42,000 crore and Bharti Airtel around Rs 33,000 crore in FY24, but the investment will taper down after their 5G network roll-out target is met as per their announcement. «We are satisfied with this work so far — but there is still more to do.

5G networks in India from the second half of 2024, said a senior executive of Finnish telecom gear maker Nokia. «You will see some early adopters this year, and then I think by the second half of 2024, there will be a big growth in the enterprises,» said Sanjay Malik, head of the India market for Nokia. Oppo, the Supreme Court on Friday refused to interfere with the Delhi High Court judgment that asked it to deposit 23% of the amount paid under a 2018 licence agreement towards «royalty» for alleged infringement of Nokia Technologies' three standard essential patents (SEPs) in cellular technology. Oppo has been accused of using the three SEPs, which are stated to be necessary to make cellular systems 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G compliant, despite expiry of its three-year agreement in 2021.
