Populist expenditure may not hit govt's fiscal deficit targets: Goldman Sach
elections invariably dents government finances, but this time around it may not be the same, thanks to strong federal revenues and a liberal dividend payment by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Goldman Sachs said. There could be some expenditure cuts as well. It is likely that a cut in public capital expenditure (as a % of GDP) will mean the government will need support from the private sector to step up capital investments, among a reduction in other current expenditures.

Infosys’ 2.3% constant currency growth was a positive surprise; not sure why guidance was cut: Mahantesh Sabarad
Mahantesh Sabarad, Independent Market Expert, says “I do not think guidance revision will lead to a massive derating in EPS estimates but potentially expectations from Infosys will get further delayed. Most of the analysts would roll forward their estimates and look at a better EPS and therefore with the lower multiple assigned, virtually retain the same target price. Something similar is likely to happen. I do not see any major upgrades coming in per se in terms of either EPS or target prices from analysts.” For Infosys. revenue has come in at 2.3% sequential growth. Margin has seen a 40 bps expansion at 21.2% and we are also looking at a TCV of around $7.7 billion. But, of course, the biggest headline is the guidance cut on the upper end. Your take. These results seem to be all right and 2.3% constant currency growth is a bit of a positive surprise and the deal wins are also very good. I am not too sure why the guidance has been tempered down. I guess like TCS, they are also facing a bit of execution issue ramp downs and late ramp-ups are likely to happen ahead. That seems to be the broader issue for the entire industry per se.

Mercedes will not play on price but value in electric vehicles: India chief Santosh Iyer
Mercedes-Benz India will not chase volumes in electric vehicles, but will focus on creating an ecosystem for EVs such as lowering the cost of ownership, building charging infrastructure and offering a hassle-free experience that will likely help boost sales eventually, the company’s top executive said. This is even as the company remains steadfast on meeting the mid-term target of EVs contributing 25% to its total sales by 2027, Mercedes-Benz India managing director and chief executive Santosh Iyer told ET. “For us, volume is not a strategy and it’s the outcome of what we do. As a luxury brand, we are measured by customer experience and profitable growth. To achieve this, we need to be cautious about how we go about EVs. It must be a long-term strategy. That’s our core strategy,” Iyer said.

Iran's Khamenei says Tehran was not behind Hamas attack on Israel
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Tuesday that Tehran had not been involved in the Hamas group's weekend attack on Israel, but he hailed what he called Israel's «irreparable» military and intelligence defeat. In his first televised speech since the attack, Khamenei said «we kiss the hands of those who planned the attack on the Zionist regime». «This destructive earthquake has destroyed some critical structures (in Israel) which will not be repaired easily… The Zionist regime's own actions are to blame for this disaster,» said Khamenei. Iran has long backed the Hamas group, which controls the Gaza Strip and rejects Israel's right to exist. Israel said earlier on Tuesday it had re-established control over the Gaza border and was planting mines where militants had toppled the barrier during their bloody weekend assault, after another night of relentless Israeli air raids on the enclave. The United States said on Monday Iran was complicit in Hamas' assault on Israel, though it said it had no intelligence or evidence pointing to Tehran's direct participation.

China's Country Garden says might not meet all debt obligations
Country Garden said Tuesday that it did not expect to meet all of its offshore payment obligations in time as it edges towards a potential default. Country Garden — one of China's biggest property developers — had racked up debts estimated at 1.43 trillion yuan ($196 billion) by the end of 2022. Its cash flow problems have ignited fears that it could collapse with consequences for China's economy, which is already suffering from record-high youth unemployment, flagging consumption and a broader crisis in the real estate sector. Country Garden, which was already formally at risk of default in September, last month repaid $22.5 million in interest on loans at the last minute during a 30-day grace period. It then negotiated the rescheduling of several repayments with creditors, with several more deadlines looming over the coming weeks. The firm said Tuesday it had missed a payment of HK$470 million ($60 million).

Not time yet to buy the dip in Adani Ports: Vinit Bolinjkar
Vinit Bolinjkar, Head of Research, Ventura Securities, says “Haifa port was a crucial cog in the wheel of Adani Ports. As the Adani group is in infrastructure, debt is a large part of their programme. That stock is taking a hit because of the uncertainty created by the Middle East tensions. Also the Supreme Court hearing on the Hindenburg Report is on October 13. So, we might as well wait until that before taking any fresh exposure to Adani stocks.” On PSU banks In the last runup, they were the ones that had outperformed the most.
