Stocks drifted to a lower close Tuesday as Wall Street waits for highly anticipated reports later this week about inflation and the economy

Investing.com — The Dow closed just lower Tuesday, as Apple led a stumble in tech despite unveiling its latest iPhone, but jump in energy stocks kept losses in check a day ahead of fresh inflation data.

Oracle sank 9% on Tuesday, after a weak forecast suggested strong competition in the cloud-computing industry and a digital spending pullback were weighing on its revenue growth. The company was on track to lose about $30 billion in market value, based on its premarket share price of $115. The stock has risen 55% this year on optimism the rise of generative AI would drive up cloud demand. Lower-than-expected revenue for the first quarter and a below-estimate forecast for the second, however, signaled the boost from AI would take longer to materialize. Oracle, known for its database software, has been playing catch-up with cloud majors such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft's Azure and Alphabet's Google Cloud at a time businesses are dialing back tech spending over concerns about the economy. CEO Safra Catz also warned of near-term weakness in revenue growth at the Cerner health records business, which Oracle bought for $28.3 billion last year.

Wall Street stocks ended lower on Tuesday as Oracle shares tumbled more than 13% after a weak forecast and surging oil prices deepened worries about persistent price pressures ahead of crucial inflation readings this week.Oracle shares dived to their lowest since June after the cloud-services provider forecast current-quarter revenue below targets and narrowly missed first-quarter expectations. Cloud-computing heavyweights Amazon.com and Microsoft each fell more than 1%, pressured by Oracle's weak forecast and by a rise in U.S. Treasury yields. Oil prices jumped more than 1%, building on a recent rally and stoking worries that sticky inflation could mean U.S.

Mid-cap and small-cap shares crumbled on Tuesday, leading the sell-off in the stock market, as worries about these segments being overheated after the recent record-breaking rally prompted investors and traders to dump them. The Nifty Midcap 150 index dropped 3% and Nifty Small-cap 250 fell 3.9%, Nifty Microcap 250 declined 5.2% on Tuesday — their biggest single-day declines since December 23, 2022. NSE's Nifty ended 3.15 points lower at 19,993.2 after hitting an all-time high of 20,110.3 earlier in the day. BSE's Sensex gained 94 points or 0.14% to close at 67,221.1 — a new record closing.
