Boon or blight? E-scooters around the world
electric scooters that have become ubiquitous in Paris and other cities worldwide will be banned in the French capital on September 1. It is the biggest metropolis to remove the app-based devices that first zoomed onto streets in 2018, but many other cities have taken action on the vehicles that can inspire love or loathing. While users hail them as eco-friendly ways to avoid gridlock, detractors consider them as an unsightly menace with the power to maim and kill. Here is a look at the state of play in other cities worldwide:Paris: the pioneer The French capital was an early adopter of e-scooters in 2018, when the pavements were soon strewn with discarded rental devices from the first operator, Lime. After an uproar over the anarchy and a number of fatal accidents, the city clamped down, reducing the number of operators to three (Dott, Lime and Tier) and the number of scooters to 15,000. For privately owned scooters, the minimum age for riders is 12 (the government wants to raise that to 14), but the Paris rental operators said last November they would step up enforcement of a minimum age of 18 — after city officials warned their licenses were in jeopardy. They also must be parked in designated spots and riders are not allowed to go over 10 kilometres per hour in most parts of Paris — but many do anyway. In April, residents voted in a referendum to ban rental scooters, a move that will not impact privately owned devices.Barcelona and Montreal: outright bans A few cities before Paris have taken the same drastic measures with an outright ban. Barcelona outlawed rental scooters on public roads in 2018.

Adani's bid to remake Dharavi spurs residents' doubts, favouritism claims
Adani's plan to rehouse a million people living in one of Asia's biggest slums is fuelling worries among residents about his capacity to deliver amid high-profile financial setbacks and allegations that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's allies afforded him favourable treatment. The Dharavi slum, about three-quarters the size of New York's Central Park, featured in Danny Boyle's Oscar-winning 2008 movie "Slumdog Millionaire". Adani is at the helm of plans to redevelop Dharavi after the Maharashtra state government in July approved his $614 million contract bid to overhaul the slum, which is known for producing leather goods, following years of failed attempts.Adani Group aims to demolish what it describes in legal documents as an area of «unhygienic, deplorable» conditions and build new towers on state-owned land to accommodate residents and their businesses. Consultancy Liases Foras estimates Adani may invest up to $12 billion on remaking Dharavi and in return get development rights that could yield revenue of up to $24 billion. Only those who already lived in Dharavi before 2000, mostly ground-floor residents, will get free homes within the redevelopment. About 700,000 inhabitants of mezzanine and upper floors are considered ineligible by the government and will be offered units up to 10 kilometers away, which they say could require them to pay upfront costs or higher rents.

Is it the right time to invest in credit risk funds?
credit risk funds and liquid funds sit on opposite ends of the risk-return spectrum. Liquid funds are usually used for parking any idle surplus, with safety as a priority, even if it means compromising on returns. Credit risk funds are fancied by yield-hungry investors for the promise of a bigger pay-off.

Walt Disney: How difficult will it be for Bob Iger to turn the company around?
Bob Iger led a 45-minute town hall session in Burbank, California. During the exchange, Iger took on questions from anxious employees on thorny issues like the recruitment ban, the outlook for conventional television enterprises, the possible sale of the company, and the company’s stance on LGBTQ concerns that had plagued the term of his predecessor Bob Chapek. Regarding the latter, Iger emphasised that a fundamental principle of Disney's storytelling was embracing inclusion, acceptance and tolerance, and it was crucial for the company to uphold this. But his big message to the employees in the end was: “The status quo is gone.” As he has set about reshaping Disney, the path has been arduous for Iger. The CEO has been dealing with a spectrum of challenges, from tackling streaming losses and dipping linear subscriptions to navigating advertising headwinds. Concurrently, he has had to manage an internal reorganisation that empowers creative divisions for content authority and distribution, while addressing vital cultural aspects like LGBT inclusion. Then there’s the key task of identifying a successor. The CEO has acknowledged that the task of turning around the Disney business has proven more challenging than he anticipated. Over the past year, Disney's stock price has fallen by 30%. On August 25, the stock closed at $83.27, mirroring levels last seen in May 2014. In the June quarter, revenue climbed 4% to $22.33 billion, yet missed forecasts. A $2.7-billion restructuring expense led to a $460-million loss, compared with last year's $1.4 billion profit. Iger's urgent focus is to halt the decline of the TV market, curb streaming losses, and arrest the stock price slide.

Snail's pace and Niksen
doing nothing means being lazy, worthless and unproductive, but the Dutch concept and practice of Niksen, which translates as 'doing nothing', is about something superlative; it relaxes you, it rejuvenates, releases all tensions, helps you reflect and refreshes mind, body and soul. In pre-digital times, we children would spend hours in the garden or park, following a snail's silvery trail. On finding the snail, we would sit there, waiting for further movement, of course, all at snail's pace.

Leeds Festival 2023: Sam Fender performs best set; halts act due to medical emergency in crowd
Sam Fender’s performance was much appreciated at the Leeds Festival 2023 on Saturday, August 26. The singer’s act drew fans from the North East at the venue. «This is the biggest milestone for us,» said the young singer, as he went on to perform from his two number-one albums. «It's good to be back up North,» said the 29-year-old, adding, «This is party night tonight. I see there's a few Geordies in tonight, always nice to see.» Dressed in a white T-shirt and playing his black-and-white striped electric guitar, Sam Fender told a tale to his fans, with some advice if they get lost. «I came to Leeds when I was 18, me and [bandmate] Dean and I got black-out drunk watching Kasabian. And I got lost and I couldn't find my mates and started doing the (sings) black and white army chant, and that's how I found my mates! So, if you get lost tonight, do that.» Sam Fender and the troupe held the audience’s attention throughout the performance, only drifting a bit.

Liverpool's strategic move thwarts Newcastle United's bid for Dominik Szoboszlai in dramatic transfer twist
Newcastle United's pursuit of Dominik Szoboszlai from Liverpool has been officially acknowledged by Eddie Howe, the team's manager. However, the potential move seems to have been hindered by financial considerations. Reports from NewcastleWorld initially indicated that the Magpies were evaluating the possibility of bringing Hungarian international Dominik Szoboszlai to their ranks during the summer transfer window. Alongside Sandro Tonali, Szoboszlai's name emerged as a potential addition to Newcastle United. Yet, rather than triggering his substantial £61 million release clause, the club's preference leaned towards engaging in negotiations below this valuation. With a considerable £52 million already committed to securing Tonali, the financial context played a significant role in the decision-making process.
