States seek more time for standard rates at hospitals
States and Union Territories have sought more time and wider consultations with all stakeholders including private hospitals, to proceed further on the Supreme Court's February directive to the Central government to work out standard rates for medical procedures and services, according to an affidavit the government filed in the apex court Monday. The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear a plea by an association of doctors and hospitals that questioned the government's move to prescribe rates for all hospitals. The matter is slated for hearing on September 10. In response to a public interest litigation filed by an NGO, the apex court had directed the Central government to come up with a concrete proposal specifying standard rates, in consultation with states. The court had warned of applying Central Government Health Scheme rates for treatment services at private facilities until standardised rates were set.

Star scientist’s claim of ‘reverse aging’ draws hail of criticism
Harvard geneticist David Sinclair, who has said his “biological age" is roughly a decade younger than his actual one, has put forward his largely unlined face as a spokesman for the longevity movement. The 54-year-old has built his brand on the idea that aging is a treatable disease. The notion has proven so seductive that legions of acolytes follow his online postings about his research and the cocktails of supplements he consumes to stave off the inevitable.

HDFC Bank to keep margins at current levels
HDFC Bank managing director Sashidhar Jagdishan said the lender «will not be chasing growth for the sake of growth» and «will be delighted even if the margins remain at the current levels». Addressing analysts on Saturday, soon after the bank declared its fourth quarter results, he declined to give any guidance but said the bank will have a positive bias towards growth over the next two to three years. He urged investors to be patient as the bank is going through a transition period following the merger with parent institution Housing Development Finance Corporation last July. Comparing HDFC Bank's transition period to the construction of the coastal road (in Mumbai connecting Marine Drive to Worli), he said: «It's like the coastal road when it was getting built; we were all sort of having a lot of problems with it, we were trying to navigate our traffic around it, but now when it's up and running you know people are so delighted.»
