Last rights: The right to die with dignity should be upheld both in letter and spirit
David Michael Malone, my friend and mentor, elected to die with dignity on 24 November at the age of 71. The veteran scholar-diplomat—a former Canadian high commissioner to India—had been diagnosed with prostate cancer a couple of years ago and Alzheimer’s disease more recently. He was spared the pain but did not want to suffer the loss of memory and degradation of the quality of life that comes with Alzheimer’s. He invoked Canada’s right to die when he was still in control of his mental faculties and passed away a day after spending an enjoyable evening out with his close friends. As much as I will miss his long-distance friendship and sage advice, I was not unhappy to see him depart the way he did.

Dairy sensitive for India, as peanut butter is to US, says official in the wake of tariff negotiations
“We have to be patient. Trade pacts do not happen overnight. It is a careful and steady process. Things are analysed carefully,” an official said on the condition of anonymity, adding that a slight impact on demand in the US could be a little challenging. India has “emerged a winner” following the reciprocal tariffs imposed by the United States, officials said, pointing out that the country has a first mover advantage compared to its competitors owing to of the Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) that the two are negotiating and because Indian exporters are better positioned to deal with the additional US tariffs. They said the country will take all measures within the World Trade Organization (WTO) framework to check dumping of goods from countries such as China which have been slapped with steeper tariffs. “The government is there to protect domestic industry from any possibility of dumping of goods in such a situation,” the official added. While the US has imposed 26% reciprocal tariffs on India, it has levied 34% additional import duties on China. India is also likely to gain from the US-China trade war, according to officials.

Study highlights 'catastrophic costs' incurred by tuberculosis patients worldwide
University of Ottawa, said that patients incurring catastrophic costs are two to four times more likely to experience treatment failure. Therefore, mitigating treatment costs will not only benefit individuals, but also health systems and communities at large, they said. Tuberculosis is a bacterial disease that spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Symptoms include a persistent cough, chest pain, fever, fatigue, among others. Findings, published in the journal PLOS Global Public Health, also showed that costs were consistently higher among patients having drug resistant tuberculosis and those identified through 'passive case finding'. The researchers suggested that actively finding cases, along with improving access to tests for drug resistant tuberculosis, may help mitigate the burden of out-of-pocket expenditures incurred by patients.

'Markets are going to...': Trump predicts boom after worst stock market crash in years triggered by his tariffs
Donald Trump presented a rosy assessment after the stock market dropped sharply Thursday over his tariffs, saying, «I think it's going very well.» «The markets are going to boom, the stock is going to boom, the country is going to boom,» he said when asked about the market as he left the White House to fly to one of his Florida golf clubs. The Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged over 1,600 points on Thursday, leading a global market selloff after President Trump’s sweeping tariff announcement triggered the sharpest shock since the COVID-19 pandemic. On Wednesday, Trump unveiled a minimum 10% tariff on imports, with significantly higher rates for goods from specific countries like China and members of the European Union. While the move rattled markets worldwide, Trump downplayed the reaction, saying it was expected. Comparing the U.S. to a sick patient needing surgery, he responded to questions about the worst stock market drop in years.

The operation is over! The patient lived and is healing: Donald Trump after announcing reciprocal tariffs
Donald Trump on Thursday said that the US economy would emerge «far stronger» even as markets went down globally after the reciprocal tariffs. Taking to social media platform Truth, Trump said, «The operation is over! The patient lived and is healing. The prognosis is that the patient will be far stronger, bigger, better and more resilient than ever before.» White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also reassured US markets. «To anyone on Wall Street this morning, I would say, 'Trust in President Trump.' This is a president who is doubling down on his proven economic formula,» she said while speaking with CNN. She said the tariffs, which include 10 percent across the board levies on imports and steeper barriers on several countries including India, meant «the United States is no longer going to be cheated by foreign nations.»

View: Will Trump's tariffs lift the veil on India's drug safety problem?
Donald Trump’s tariffs. Some are confident that whatever is announced on Wednesday will not hurt them; others are genuinely uncertain how to manage if they can’t export to the US. The pharmaceutical industry — which is well known globally for churning out generic drugs that are the backbone of many countries’ health systems — should be particularly worried. Over 30% of Indian pharma exports go to the US, and it provides an even larger proportion of earnings. Trump has promised, in the past, that levies on pharma imports would begin at 25%, similar to what he imposed on cars recently. But the president seems to have walked that back more recently, perhaps because the administration is uncertain of the consequences of a sharp rise in the price of off-patent drugs.
