Priyanka Gandhi on Monday said that reports of voter list manipulation appear before elections and it is very dangerous for democracy. She said the government should allow discussion on the issue in Parliament. «The way reports of voter list manipulation comes before every election, it is very dangerous for our democracy. The entire opposition in the Parliament wants a detailed discussion on the voter list. This discussion is very important for the protection of democracy and the Constitution. The government should give up its stubbornness and allow this discussion done,» Priyanka Gandhi said in a post on X. She also shared demand made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha that there should be discussion on voters list.

Election Commission Monday said the matter related to duplicate voter identity card numbers is a «legacy issue» with such cards being issued even between 2008 and 2013 when the BJP-led NDA was not in power. The EC had in the past during annual electoral roll updation also been directing states to remove all discrepancies in elector photo identity card (EPIC). The poll body had recently clarified that irrespective of EPIC number, an elector can cast a vote only at their designated polling station. To allay any apprehensions, all cases of duplicate EPIC number will be resolved within three months time by ensuring a unique EPIC number to the existing electors having duplicate EPIC number and for future electors as well, the EC had said.

Electors Photo Identity Cards (EPIC) numbers, the Election Commission of India announced on Friday that it will resolve the issue in the next three months. After detailed discussions within its technical teams and consultations with Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) across the country, the ECI said that it has committed to ensuring that each elector has a unique national EPIC number. «The Commission has now decided to resolve this long pending issue after detailed discussions within the technical teams and concerned CEOs in the next three months by ensuring a unique national EPIC number to the existing electors having a duplicate EPIC number and for future electors as well,» it said in the statement.

Aaditya Thackeray on Tuesday demanded the dismissal of the Devendra Fadnavis-led government and imposition of President's rule in Maharashtra in view of the «deteriorating» law and order situation in the state. He was speaking to reporters here in the wake of the resignation of state minister and NCP leader Dhananjay Munde, days after his close aide Walmik Karad was named as the mastermind in the Beed sarpanch murder case. He said only Munde's resignation was not sufficient considering the law and order situation in the state. Deshmukh, the sarpanch of Massajog village in Beed, was abducted, tortured and murdered on December 9 last year allegedly for attempting to stop an extortion bid targeting an energy company in the district. Talking to reporters, Thackeray said, «Resignation (of Munde) is not enough. The government should be dismissed and President's rule should be imposed in the state.» The former minister also cited recent instances of crime against women like the rape of a 26-year old woman in a Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus in Pune and the setting ablaze of a 17-year-old girl in Mumbai. «Law and order situation in the state has been deteriorating since the last three years. If the government is not dismissed, who will come to Maharashtra for investment, how will citizens be safe?» he asked.
