Provident Gap Pool Moodys country social India must focus on education and infra for growth: Moody's report
India, and they would need to focus on education and infrastructure to take advantage of the demographic dividend, according to the latest report by Moody's Investor Service. «The ability of sovereigns to address these challenges will determine the extent to which their large populations can take advantage of opportunities to enhance long-term economic growth,» the ratings and research firm said in a report released Monday. While it appreciated the efforts made by India and the Philippines on infrastructure and governance, the firm noted that considerable work needed to be done on parameters like education and labour force participation. «There remains a considerable gap in the quality of education between Pakistan, Bangladesh and India compared with China and other peers in Southeast Asia, which contributes to labour-force participation imbalances,» the report said. The report pointed out that while the six large economies would contribute to a third of the global population increase over the next two decades and contribute significantly to the global labour pool, it said that «population growth unaccompanied by adequate job creation is likely to exacerbate sovereigns' exposure to social risks. According to the United Nations, India crossed China this year to become the most populous country in the world, and its population shall take another 40 years to reach its peak.

COST UPS Provident Target Pool cover Genetic test that saved infant's life offers hope for millions more, says research
No one knew what was wrong until a test that looked at her full genetic blueprint found a rare bleeding disorder called factor XIII deficiency — an early diagnosis that saved her life. «You have this hopeless feeling when you don't really know what's going on,» said her father, Mike Schulte. «Casting a wide net really made a world of difference figuring this out quickly and getting her the right care that she needed almost immediately.» Brynn, now 4, got the genetic testing as part of a clinical trial, the results of which were published recently in the Journal of the American Medical Association. «Whole genome» tests are nearly twice as good as narrower tests at unearthing genetic abnormalities that can cause disease in infants — the study found 49% of abnormalities, compared to 27% with more commonly used tests targeting particular types of genetic diseases. Whole genome tests could solve the problem of doing several narrowly targeted tests on babies, which still might not find the disorder. Experts caution there are some issues, because labs vary in how they interpret results, and whole genome tests are costlier and less likely to be covered by insurance.

UPS Waters Action Pool show cover Inside At Japanese nuclear plant, controversial treated water release just the beginning of decommissioning
Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant's central control room in northeastern Japan, the treated water transfer switch is on. A graph on a computer monitor nearby shows a steady decrease of water levels as treated radioactive wastewater is diluted and released into the Pacific Ocean. In the coastal area of the plant, two seawater pumps are in action, gushing torrents of seawater through sky blue pipes into the big header where the treated water, which comes down through a much thinner black pipe from the hilltop tanks, gets diluted by hundreds of times before the release. The sound of the treated and diluted radioactive water flowing into an underground secondary pool was heard from beneath the ground during Sunday's first plant tour for media, including The Associated Press, since the controversial release began. «The best way to eliminate the contaminated water is to remove the melted fuel debris,» said Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings spokesperson Kenichi Takahara, who escorted Sunday's media tour for the foreign press. But Takahara said the scarcity of information from inside the reactors makes planning and development of the necessary robotic technology and a facility for the melted fuel removal extremely difficult. «Removal of the melted fuel debris is not like we can just take it out and be finished,» he said. The projected decades-long release of treated water has been strongly opposed by fishing groups and criticized by neighboring countries.

COST Pool cover Waiting period shouldn’t be the defining reason for taking a health policy: Harsh Roongta
Harsh Roongta, Founder, Fee Only Investment Advisers LLP, says “the entire waiting period is like a handicap, so that the person with a higher risk can still participate in the same pool as the person with a lower risk. So there can possibly be waiting periods, conceptually, whether they are allowed or not, I am not very sure in critical policies or disease specific policies like cancer. I do not think there is any restriction like that, but I am not completely sure.”How long is the waiting period before insurance kicks in for surgery? In case of knee replacement or hip replacement or hysterectomy and similar things, typically waiting periods are about two years, but it could vary from policy to policy.

COST UPS Citi Pool cover Anand Rathi's Amjad Khan on new age health insurance, zero waiting period policies & more
Amjad Khan, Executive Director — Employee Benefit Practice & Workplace Wellness, Anand Rathi, says “there are options today of health insurance policies with zero waiting periods. But under a conventional policy, you cannot do away with the waiting period. Probably you can look at a reduction. If you are 25 years of age, your waiting period can go down to two years. But you cannot have a zero waiting period unless you look at these new age policies which have a zero waiting period under them.”What would be those criterias where an insurance company would be willing to skip the waiting period? Can we pay more premium and just skip this entire process for a few years? What we see in the last 12-18 months is that there are a few insurance companies in the Indian market who are giving policies which do not have these waiting periods.
