Now, wearable cos bet on smart rings
Boat and Noise are chasing premium fitness enthusiasts with smart rings, a relatively new form factor of wearable that's smaller in size and can be worn at all times in a fresh bet on premiumisation on the back of its existing user base. This even as they continue driving down average selling prices of smart watches and frenetically refreshing their portfolio to capture a larger pool of users. «For the last three years, there were mostly first-time buyers, now people are educated about what wearable devices do, and we believe it's the right time to move to better devices,» said Noise co-founder Amit Khatri. Co-founder Sameer Mehta said Boat has imported a small batch of 5,000 units for the first sale and is readying distribution, forecasting shipments of 50,000-100,000 units in the first year, depending on how people perceive its value proposition of enhanced wellness tracking. «We have been experimenting with how big a market this can get, and the initial response has been great. There are a lot of users who are on their second watch, and this could be their third purchase,» Mehta said. While Noise did not disclose exact numbers, co-founder Amit Khatri said they have stopped taking pre-orders for the product after receiving large volumes since opening for pre-orders. The expansion into smart rings comes on the back of strong 53.3% on-year growth in wearables in the first half of 2023, according to IDC.

The Fukushima nuclear plant begins releasing radioactive wastewater into the sea
Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant says it has begun releasing its first batch of treated radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean — a controversial step, but a milestone for Japan's battle with the growing radioactive water stockpile. In a live video from a control room at the plant Thursday, Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings showed a staff member turn on a seawater pump, marking the beginning of the controversial project that is expected to last for decades. «Seawater Pump A activated,» the main operator said, confirming the release was underway. TEPCO later confirmed that the seawater pump was activated at 1:03 p.m.

Global Capability Centers mushroom again as focus falls on India’s deep talent pool
Global Capability Centers (GCC), or captive technology facilities of large global lenders and MNCs, such as Citi, Deutsche Bank and T-Systems, are strengthening their Indian presence in their 2.0 avatar after having partially scaled down operations in the country around 10-15 years ago. The global captives had sold a part or even their entire operations to Indian IT companies, mostly during the global financial crisis, to focus on core operations instead. But they now see India as a crucial profit and value-addition centre, helping their global headquarters in finance, supply chain, research and development (R&D) operations, building digital and artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. Deutsche Bank, which sold their captive to HCLTech in 2004, said its GCC has already onboarded over 2,500 hires so far this year and expects the trend to continue in the similar range for the rest of the year.

Skilling of care workers on cards; govt to train healthcare staff under Heal by India initiative
Heal by India initiative. The plan is to create a pool of nurses and care workers and help India to become the Care Capital of the world, a senior government official told ET. «While the master project is 'Heal in India', 'Heal by India' is the initiative of the ministry of health and family welfare, the ministry of skills development will provide skills training and other necessary requirements for movement of Indian healthcare workers to different parts of the world,» the official said. The National Skills Development Council of India has entered into an agreement with the Indian Nursing Council as well as the health sector skills councils for deploying skilled healthcare professionals and care workers outside India. Besides, the ministry is in talks with its counterparts in Israel, Portugal, Finland and Germany to assess demand for caregivers and will soon come up with customised training modules to meet country-specific requirements. The plan is to tap into the human resource pool of Indian Nursing Council, state governments and private healthcare institutions and provide them with training of international standards to facilitate overseas placement. The ministry is in the process of aggregating demand from destination countries after which it will provide domain related skills training, foreign language proficiency training and other capacity building activities to make them employable overseas.
