Philippine military on high alert after bombing called terrorism
«I condemn in the strongest possible terms the senseless and most heinous acts perpetrated by foreign terrorists,» said President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. «Extremists who wield violence against the innocent will always be regarded as enemies to our society.» The blast in Marawi, a city besieged by pro-Islamic State militants for five months in 2017, followed the killing of 11 combatants in a military operation on Friday in Maguindanao del Sur some 200 km (125 miles) away. Urging calm, Marcos posted on the social media platform X that he had instructed the national police and armed forces «to ensure the protection and safety of civilians and the security of affected and vulnerable communities». «Rest assured we will bring the perpetrators of this ruthless act to justice.» Army Major General Gabriel Viray III called the attack at the Mindanao State University «a terror act», speaking to reporters as explosive disposal experts were deployed. «Right now we are on heightened alert and our troops remain vigilant as we are determining the motive and identifying the perpetrators to really ascertain who was behind it,» Viray said.

George Putnam III tips to spot turnaround stocks for solid returns
George Putnam III says most brokers and Wall Street analysts avoid turnaround situations because they have been burned by the stock on the way down. According to Putnam, most investors chase the same stocks which are followed by hundreds of highly trained analysts and so it is hard to outperform. So he advises investors to seek out unloved, down-and-out turnaround situations as when these stocks eventually do come back, they can soar as investors pile into them. «Our approach is simple. We avoid the „blue chips“ and „hot“ stocks that most investors are stampeding into. Instead, we search out companies that have had some problems and are temporarily out-of-favor, but are in the process of turning around. These stocks seem like laggards when we first identify them, but as the turnaround becomes more evident, Wall Street will jump into the stock and push the price up — often dramatically,» he wrote in his Turnaround Investment Letter. Who is George Putnam III?

Chhindwara Election Result 2023: Kamal Nath leads on home turf in early trends even as Kamal, aka BJP, blooms in state
Kamal Nath, the chief minister face for Congress, was leading with close to 2,000 votes in Chhindwara constituency in early trends. However, the firecrackers were kept in the box as Congress seemed to have failed to topple the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party that took lead in 150 out of 230 seats. While Kamal Nath got 14,485 votes in the first two rounds of 22, BJP's Vivek Bunty Sahu was second placed with 8,507 votes, according to ECI website. The fight is going to be between Kamal Nath and Sahu as other candidates such as Bahujan Samaj Party's Thakur Trivikram Hirpachi or Ahina Samaj PArty's Rajesh Tantrik were left far behind. As Madhya Pradesh went to polls on November 17, the Congress chief ministerial face and PCC President Kamal Nath had said he has faith in the people and that they will side with the truth.

Trump calls Biden the 'destroyer' of democracy despite his own efforts to overturn 2020 election
President Donald Trump on Saturday attempted to turn the tables on his likely rival in November, President Joe Biden, arguing that the man whose election victory Trump tried to overturn is “the destroyer of American democracy." Trump's allegations about Biden, a Democrat, echo the ones that Biden has been making for years against his predecessor. As Trump has dominated the Republican presidential primary and talked about targeting his rivals and the news media if he wins the White House again, Biden has stepped up his own warnings, contending Trump is “ determined to destroy American democracy." On Saturday, Trump made his most explicit argument to date on why voters should instead see his rival as the bigger democratic threat.

German tourist stabbed to death in Paris 'terror' attack
Paris on Saturday before being arrested, officials said. The attack took place close to the Eiffel Tower during a busy weekend night and came with the country on its highest alert for attacks as tensions rise against the background of the war between Israel and Hamas. «We will not give in to terrorism,» Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne wrote on X, formerly Twitter, after the attack. President Emmanuel Macron said he was sending his condolences to the family of a German killed in the «terrorist attack». French anti-terror prosecutors said that they would now take on the investigation. The attacker was known to authorities as a radical Islamist and was being treated for mental illness, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said at the scene by the River Seine, adding that the man had shouted «Allahu Akbar» («God is greatest») before being arrested. He fatally stabbed the German tourist, born in 1999, with a knife and then used a hammer to attack others as he sought to escape on the other side of the River Seine. The area by Bir Hakeim bridge, usually thronging with tourists and locals, was cordoned off by police and bright with the flashing lights of security forces and emergency services. 'Violently threatened them' The Paris prosecutor's office said the attacker, born in 1997, is French and has been arrested in an investigation into murder and attempted murder. Darmanin said the man had already been sentenced in 2016 to four years in prison for planning another attack which he failed to carry out. «A man attacked a couple who were foreign tourists.

COP28: India, China refrain from signing pledge to triple world's renewable energy capacity by 2030
India and China both on Saturday refrained from signing the pledge at the COP28 climate summit to triple the world's renewable energy capacity by 2030 even though New Delhi already committed to it as part of its G20 presidency. During the UN's climate talks here, 118 countries committed to tripling the global renewable energy capacity by 2030 in a highly endorsed initiative. This ambitious goal aims to reduce the reliance on fossil fuels in the world's overall energy production.

Pledges made so far at the COP28 climate talks
But observers have warned that the headline-grabbing — but voluntary — pledges promoted by the UAE could distract from the more challenging work of negotiating a formal COP28 text at the climax of the two-week talks. As pressure builds during what is expected to be the hottest year on record, here are some major funding pledges and declarations announced so far at COP28. — Loss and damage - The first day of the talks saw the official launch of a «loss and damage» fund to help vulnerable countries cope with the increasingly costly and damaging impacts of climate disasters. Thursday's agreement came with pledges of $100 million each from the UAE and Germany, $109 million from France, $50 million from Britain, $25 million from Denmark and $17.5 million from the United States, the world's biggest oil and gas producer. The total committed so far is a little over $576 million, according to a tally by the Natural Resources Defense Council, an environmental advocacy group. That falls vastly short of the $100 billion a year that developing nations — which have historically been least responsible for greenhouse gas emissions — have said are needed to cover losses from natural disasters. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa told the summit that «we need to mobilise funding on a far greater scale». Campaigners said the US offering was woefully inadequate from the world's biggest historical polluter. Bineshi Albert of the Climate Justice Alliance called it «insulting». «It is a paltry, shameful amount of money that shows the US is completely uninterested in prioritising or being accountable to the climate impacts frontline communities are facing,» she said. — Food and farming - More than 130 countries have agreed to

COP28: Calls for more nuclear and less 'destructive' methane
United States led calls at UN climate talks Saturday for efforts to curb methane emissions but also pushed a deeply controversial drive to boost nuclear energy to curb global warming. With smoggy skies in Dubai highlighting the challenges facing the world, other pledges are expected at the COP28 conference, including stepping up the deployment of renewable energy. The use of nuclear power as a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels is highly controversial as environmental groups are concerned about safety and the disposal of nuclear waste. But more than 20 nations ranging from the US to Ghana, Japan and several European countries said in a declaration that it plays a «key role» in the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by mid-century. They called for the tripling of nuclear energy capacity by 2050 from 2020 levels. «We are not making the argument to anybody that this is absolutely going to be a sweeping alternative to every other energy source,» US climate envoy John Kerry said at COP28. «But we know because (of) the science and the reality of facts… that you can't get to net zero 2050 without some nuclear,» he said. The other signatories include Britain, France, South Korea, Ukraine and the United Arab Emirates.

Israel intensifies its assault on southern Gaza, causing renewed concern about civilian deaths
Israel pounded targets in the southern Gaza Strip on Saturday, intensifying a renewed offensive that followed a weeklong truce with Hamas and giving rise to renewed concerns about civilian casualties. At least 200 Palestinians have been killed since the fighting resumed Friday morning, according to the Health Ministry in Hamas-run Gaza, even as the United States urged ally Israel to do everything possible to protect civilians. “This is going to be very important going forward,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Friday after meetings with Arab foreign ministers in Dubai, wrapping up his third Middle East tour since the war started. “It’s something we’re going to be looking at very closely.”Many of Israel’s attacks Saturday were focused on the Khan Younis area in southern Gaza, where the military said it had struck more than 50 Hamas targets with airstrikes, tank fire and its navy.
