Target Man President shootings country social shock Suspected gunman 'neutralised' after Brussels attack
Brussels police arrested a suspected gunman accused of shooting dead two Swedish football fans in what Belgium's prime minister condemned as an act of «terrorist madness». Officials said police opened fire and the suspect was «neutralised» during the arrest, which followed an intensive overnight manhunt in the Belgian capital for an assailant armed with an automatic rifle. There were conflicting accounts of the suspect's condition after his arrest which took place in the Schaerbeek district of central Brussels. Prime Minister Alexander de Croo earlier said the detained man was of Tunisian origin and had been living in the country illegally. He added that someone claiming responsibility for the killings had posted on social media that he was inspired by the Islamic State extremist group. «The terrorist attack that happened yesterday was committed with total cowardice, the attacker chose as a target two Swedish football fans,» de Croo told a news conference, adding that a third person — a taxi driver — was seriously wounded. «Terrorism strikes indiscriminately,» he said.

Hamas released a video on Monday showing a statement from one of the captives seized in last week's devastating attack on Israel. In the footage, the woman, whose injured arm is shown being treated by an unidentified medical worker, identifies herself as 21-year-old Mia Schem and asks to be returned to her family as quickly as possible. At least 199 Israelis and foreigners were seized by Hamas gunmen and taken captive in the attack, which killed 1,300 people, the largest number of dead in a single day in Israel's 75-year history. The Israeli military issued a statement, saying it was in constant touch with Schem's family and condemning Hamas as a «murderous terrorist organization». It said it was using «all intelligence and operational measures» for the return of the captives. «In the video, Hamas is trying to portray itself as a humane organization, while it is a responsible for the murder and abduction of babies, women, children, and elderly,» it said.
